Convert a disk image using Disk Utility

You can use Disk Utility to convert the image format and encryption of a disk image.

For example, if you create a read/write disk image but later want to prevent changes to the image, you can convert it to one of the read-only disk image formats.

  1. Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
  2. Select the disk image if it appears in the list at the left, and then choose Images > Convert.

Otherwise, choose Images > Convert, and then select a disk image in the dialog that appears.

  3. Choose a new image format or encryption option.
  4. Type a new name for the image, and then click Save.

You can also change the format of a read/write disk image by erasing it. When you create a disk image, its format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). When you erase a disk image, you can change it to another format, such as MS-DOS. Erasing a disk image deletes all the files it contains.
