If the pointer doesn’t move using the trackpad

If the pointer doesn’t move when you use the trackpad on your portable computer, make sure you’re using only one finger on the trackpad. Depending on the type of portable computer you have and the options you set in Trackpad preferences, using more than one finger on the trackpad may not move the pointer.

  • If the “Ignore accidental trackpad input” checkbox in Trackpad preferences is selected, using two fingers on the trackpad will not move the pointer.
  • On some portables, you can use two fingers on the trackpad to scroll in windows that have scroll bars. If your computer has this feature, and you use two or more fingers to move the pointer, the pointer will not move.

To see your trackpad settings, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Trackpad, and see if the “Ignore accidental trackpad input” checkbox is selected. If you don’t see checkboxes for scrolling, your computer does not have this feature. On some portable computers, Trackpad preferences are located in Keyboard & Mouse preferences.

If the trackpad is still not working, your computer may be displaying a low battery alert that you can’t see. Connect your computer to an electrical outlet or an external keyboard to see the alert.

If you still have difficulty, you may have a problem with your hardware. See an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
