iTunes 10 for Windows: Set up your iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Before you add content to your device, you need to set it up using iTunes. You can set up your device for manual or automatic syncing.
If your device has enough capacity to fit your entire iTunes library, the simplest way to add content to it is to choose automatic syncing and set iTunes to sync everything.
If your iTunes library has more content than your device can hold, or you don’t want to sync your entire library, you can still choose automatic syncing. You can have iTunes select items to sync at random, you can select specific items to sync, or you can set rules to have iTunes add only content that meets your criteria.
For the most precise control over the content on your device, choose manual syncing and add items to your device individually. If you choose manual syncing, you can also fill your device with a single click by using Autofill.
You can change your settings any time you connect your device to your computer.
To set up your iPod, iPhone, or iPad for the first time:
Connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
If iTunes doesn’t open automatically, open it.
When the device appears in iTunes (below Devices), select it.
The Setup Assistant for your device appears.
Type a name for your device.
To set up your device to sync music automatically with iTunes, make sure “Automatically sync songs to my device” is selected.
To set up your device to sync apps automatically with iTunes, make sure “Automatically sync apps to my device” is selected.
If there are more songs in your iTunes library than your device can hold, iTunes creates a random playlist of the correct size and syncs it to your device. You can edit this playlist or create other playlists to sync at any time.
To fill any remaining space with photos, select “Automatically add photos to my device.”
This setting applies only if there is space remaining on your device after iTunes syncs other content you’ve chosen to sync.
If you selected automatic syncing in the Setup Assistant, iTunes begins syncing your device. If you deselected automatic syncing during setup, the syncing interface for your device appears, with the Summary pane selected.
