Add a password hint

A password hint can help you remember your password. The hint appears if you enter the wrong password three consecutive times, or if you click the question mark in the password field in the login window.

Add or change your password hint

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

  2. Click Change Password.

  3. Enter your existing password in the “Old password” field, enter and verify a new password, then enter a password hint.

  4. Click Change Password.

Add or change someone else’s password hint

An administrator may add a hint or reset the password of other users.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

  2. Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.

  3. Select a user, then click Reset Password.

  4. Enter and verify a new password for the user, enter a password hint, then click Reset Password.
