Safari 9 (El Capitan): Use Safari extensions

Safari extensions are software programs you can install to customize the way your browser works. For example, extensions can show news headlines in a bar below the toolbar, change the appearance of web content, or add buttons to the Safari toolbar.

In order to provide these features, extensions may access the content of the webpages you visit. It’s good practice to check which extensions you have installed and make sure you are familiar with what they do.

Tip:   The new Safari Extensions Gallery (Safari > Safari Extensions) is the safest and most reliable place to download Safari Extensions. These extensions are signed and hosted by Apple, and they update automatically.

Choose Safari > Preferences, click Extensions, then do any of the following:

Turn an extension on or off: Select the extension, then select the “Enable [extension name]” checkbox.

Change an extension’s settings: Select the extension, then select or deselect settings.

Automatically update extensions you installed from the Safari Extensions Gallery: Select “Automatically update extensions from the Safari Extensions Gallery.”

Update extensions manually: When there are updates available for your extensions, an Updates button appears at the bottom of the Extensions list. Click Updates to see and install available updates.

Install extensions from the Safari Extensions Gallery: Click Get Extensions, then click Install Now to install the extension you want.

You can also choose Safari > Safari Extensions.

Install extensions from a developer’s website: Download, then open the .safariextz file. The Safari Extensions preferences pane opens and asks you to confirm that the extension is from a trusted source. Click Trust to install the extension.

Remove an extension: Select the extension, then click Uninstall.

Installing or uninstalling extensions, and turning them on or off, may take effect immediately or after you go to a new webpage or refresh the current page.
