Find My Friends: Share your location

Share your location

When you share your location, your friends can see where you are on a map, set location notifications, and more. You can share your location indefinitely or for a period of time. You can also ask to follow your friends.

If you’re using Find My Friends on multiple devices, you can select the device you use to share your location.

Note: If you joined Family Sharing and your family members are sharing their locations with you, your family members are added automatically to Find My Friends and are marked as favorites. For more information, see the Apple Support article Share your location with your family.

  2. Tap in the To field, then enter a contact’s name, email address, or phone number. Tap Return after each entry.

You can also share your location with AirDrop, if your friend is nearby and using a device that’s set up for AirDrop. Simply tap the name of your friend. For more information, see the user guide for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

  3. Tap Send, then choose Share for One Hour, Share Until End of Day, or Share Indefinitely.

The friend appears in your Friends list with the label “is a Follower.” To ask to see your friend’s location, tap the friend, then tap Ask to Follow.

Share your location from Messages

When you share your location in Messages, your friend can follow you in Messages and Find My Friends.

  1. In the Messages conversation with your friend, tap My account button or your friend’s profile picture, then tap the Info button .

  2. Tap Share My Location, then choose how long you want to share your location.

    • If you choose Share for One Hour or Share Until End of Day, you see the time left when you tap the Info button in the conversation. You also appear in Find My Friends on your friend’s device for the hour or day.

    • If you choose Share Indefinitely, you’re added to Find My Friends on your friend’s device.

When you start or stop sharing your location, you receive an alert within the Messages conversation that lets you know your status.

Note: If you turn off Share My Location in Find My Friends, your friends and anyone temporarily following you through Messages won’t be able to see you, because location sharing settings for both Find My Friends and Messages are managed with iCloud.
