OS X Yosemite: Turn off notifications

Turn off notifications

If you don’t want to see notifications in the top-right corner of your screen, you can turn them off. You can turn off notifications for certain apps, or turn off all notifications during specified times by setting Do Not Disturb. For example, you can turn off notifications sent from the Calendar app, or turn off all notifications for when you’re asleep.

Turn off notifications for an app

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Notifications.

  2. Select the app on the left, then choose None below “[App] alert style” on the right.

The app’s notifications won’t appear on your screen. If you also don’t want to see the app’s notifications listed in Notification Center, drag the app down, to the Not in Notification Center list on the left.

Set Do Not Disturb for specific times

When Do Not Disturb is on, you don’t receive notifications on your screen or hear notification sounds. However, the notifications still appear in Notification Center.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Notifications.

  2. Select Do Not Disturb at the top of the list on the left.

  3. On the right, select when to turn off all notifications.

    • For a set amount of time every day: Select From, then enter the start and end times.

    • When your display is asleep: Select “When the display is sleeping.”

For information about sleep settings, see Set sleep and wake times for your Mac

    • When you’re mirroring or projecting your screen: Select “When mirroring to TVs and projectors.”

For information about AirPlay mirroring, see Use AirPlay to see your desktop on an HDTV.

  4. If you want, you can select options to still allow call notifications, or only allow call notifications if the same person calls within three minutes.

When Do Not Disturb is on, the Notification Center icon in the menu bar is dimmed.

At any time, you can turn off Do Not Disturb by Option-clicking the Notification Center icon.

Set Do Not Disturb for the rest of the day

When Do Not Disturb is on, you don’t receive notifications on your screen or hear notification sounds. However, the notifications still appear in Notification Center.

Click the Notification Center icon in the menu bar, scroll down, then click to turn on Do Not Disturb. You can also Option-click the Notification Center icon in the menu bar.

When Do Not Disturb is on, the Notification Center icon is dimmed.

Do Not Disturb turns off automatically at midnight. To turn off Do Not Disturb earlier, scroll down in Notification Center, then click to turn off Do Not Disturb, or Option-click the Notification Center icon.
