OS X Yosemite: Put your Mac to sleep

Put your Mac to sleep
Save energy by putting your Mac to sleep when you’re not using it

When you’re not using your Mac, you can save energy by putting it to sleep. When your Mac is in sleep, it’s turned on but consumes much less power. It takes your Mac less time to wake from sleep than it does to start up after being turned off.

Sleep and wake your Mac

To put your Mac to sleep, do any of the following:

  • Tap the power button once.

  • Choose Apple menu > Sleep.

  • On a portable Mac, close the display.

  • If you’re using a portable Mac with a CD and DVD drive, press Option–Command (⌘)–Media Eject key (⏏).

To wake your Mac, do any of the following:

  • Tap the power button once.

  • Choose Apple menu > Sleep.

  • Press a key on the keyboard, or click the mouse or trackpad.

  • On a portable Mac, open the display.

Sleep and wake your Mac using an Apple Remote

If your Mac has an ambient light sensor, you can put it to sleep and wake it with an Apple Remote.

Put your Mac to sleep: Press and hold the Play/Pause button on the remote.

Wake your Mac: Press any button on the remote.

If you connected your Mac to a display, you can customize the function of the display’s power button and the brightness buttons for the Mac in the Options pane of Displays preferences.
