Share GarageBand songs

You can import a GarageBand for iPad song via iTunes, and export a song as a GarageBand for iPad song or as an audio file to share with your friends or to use on another iPad. You can also email a song without leaving GarageBand. You can import GarageBand for iPhone songs via iTunes, but you can’t import a GarageBand for Mac song to GarageBand for iPad.

You can also share a GarageBand song to your Facebook, YouTube, or SoundCloud account; send a song to another app on your device; or share a song as a ringtone (sharing as a ringtone requires iOS 6 or later).

Import a GarageBand for iPad song

  1. Connect your iPad to your computer and open iTunes on your computer.

  2. Select the iPad from the list on the left.

  3. At the top of the iTunes window, click Apps.

  4. In the File Sharing area, select GarageBand in the Apps list.

  5. Do one of the following:

    • Drag a song to the Documents list.

    • Click Add, navigate to the location of the song you want to add, select it, then click Choose.

  6. In GarageBand, tap the My Songs button, tap the Add Song button Add Song button, then tap Copy from iTunes.

  7. Tap the song you want to import.

After you import a song, you can open it in the My Songs browser.

Send a GarageBand song to iTunes

  1. Tap My Songs, then tap Select.

  2. Tap the song you want to send, then tap the Action button Share button.

  3. Tap Share Song via iTunes.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • To send the song as a GarageBand song, tap GarageBand.

    • To send the song as an audio file, tap iTunes, then tap Share.

    After you tap the iTunes icon, you can choose the quality of the file GarageBand sends to iTunes. You can also add artist, composer, and title information that appears in iTunes.

  5. Sync your iPad with your computer.

    In iTunes, the exported song appears in the Documents list in the File Sharing area when GarageBand is selected.

  6. Do one of the following:

    • Drag the song from the GarageBand Documents list to the Finder.

    • Click Save As, navigate to the location where you want to save the song, then click Save.

You can open the GarageBand song in GarageBand on your Mac, or play the audio file in iTunes (or any compatible audio application) on your computer. GarageBand songs cannot be opened on a Windows computer.

Send a GarageBand song via email

  1. Tap My Songs, then tap the Action button Share button.

  2. Tap Share Song via Mail.

  3. Enter the artist, composer, and album name if you wish, then tap Email.

    An email message appears, with the song as an attachment in AAC format.

  4. Tap the To, Cc/Bcc, and Subject fields to edit the recipients and the subject of the email. To choose recipients from your Address Book, tap the Add Recipient button.

  5. Tap the body of the email to edit the message text.

  6. When the email is ready, tap Send in the upper-right corner to send it.

    You can’t send the email until you add at least one recipient.

Open a GarageBand song in iMovie or another app

You can open a GarageBand song in iMovie, or in another app on your device. The app must be compatible with the Open in function.

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to share (or touch and hold the song).

  2. Tap the Action button Share button, then tap Open in.

    You can choose the audio quality of the file GarageBand sends to the app, and add artist, composer, and album information.

  3. Tap Share.

    A list shows apps that can open the song. If there no compatible apps on your device, the list is empty.

  4. Tap the icon of the app you want to open the song in.

Share a song to nearby devices using AirDrop

You can share songs with other iOS devices using AirDrop. AirDrop is available for devices featuring a Lightning connector.

Before sharing a song using AirDrop, you must turn it on in the Control Center. You can also choose whether to share with all devices using AirDrop, or only those in your Contacts.

  1. Tap My Songs, then tap Select.

  2. Tap the song you want to send, then tap the Action button Share button.

    A panel appears, showing available iOS devices you can share with.

  3. Tap the device you want to share with.

  4. If you want, you can enter artist, composer, and album information for the song in the Share Song panel.

  5. Tap Share.

    To return to the My Songs browser without sharing the song, tap Cancel.

A notification appears on the device it is shared with. After the song is downloaded to the device, it opens in GarageBand (if GarageBand is the only compatible app) or presents a list of compatible music apps.

Send a GarageBand song to Facebook

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to share (or touch and hold the song).

  2. Tap the Action button Share button.

  3. Tap Share Song To Facebook.

  4. If you are not logged in to Facebook, log in.

  5. Type a title and description for the song.

  6. Tap the Privacy setting you want the song to have, then tap Share.

    The first time you share from GarageBand to Facebook, an alert appears, asking if GarageBand can post privately on your behalf. Tap OK to share to Facebook.

    The song is uploaded to Facebook as a movie showing an image of the GarageBand logo.

  7. Do one of the following:

    • To open the Facebook site on your device, tap Visit.

    • To return to GarageBand, tap Close.

You can log into Facebook, or create a new Facebook account, in the Settings app.

Send a GarageBand song to YouTube

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to share (or touch and hold the song).

  2. Tap the Action button Share button.

  3. Tap Share Song To YouTube.

  4. If you are not logged in to YouTube, log in.

  5. Type a title and description for the song.

  6. Tap the Privacy setting you want the song to have, then tap Share.

    The song is uploaded to YouTube as a movie showing an image of the GarageBand logo.

  7. Do one of the following:

    • To send an email with a link to the song on YouTube, tap Tell a Friend.

    • To return to GarageBand, tap Close.

Send a GarageBand song to SoundCloud

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to share (or touch and hold the song).

  2. Tap the Action button Share button.

  3. Tap Share Song To SoundCloud.

  4. If you are not logged in to SoundCloud, log in.

  5. Type a title for the song.

  6. Tap the Visibility, Permissions, and Quality settings you want the song to have, then tap Share.

    The song is uploaded to SoundCloud as an audio file with the selected quality setting.

  7. Do one of the following:

    • To open SoundCloud in Safari, tap View on SoundCloud.

    • To send an email with a link to the song on SoundCloud, tap Tell a Friend.

    • To return to GarageBand, tap Close.

Share a GarageBand song as a ringtone or text tone

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to export (or touch and hold the song).

  2. Tap the Action button Share button, then tap Share Song As Ringtone.

    The Export Ringtone panel opens, showing the name for the ringtone. By default, the ringtone uses the same name as the song.

    The maximum length for exported ringtones is 30 seconds. If the exported ringtone exceeds the maximum length, a dialog appears. Tap Continue to have GarageBand shorten the ringtone automatically, or tap Cancel to return to the song so you can shorten it.

  3. To rename the ringtone, tap the name and type a new name.

  4. Tap Export.

  5. In the Ringtone Export Successful panel, do one of the following:

    • To return to the My Songs browser, tap OK.

    • To choose a use for the ringtone, tap Use sound as, then do one of the following:

      • To use the ringtone as your standard ringtone, replacing the existing ringtone, tap Standard Ringtone.

      • To use the ringtone as your standard text tone, replacing the existing text tone, tap Standard Text Tone.

      • To see a list of your contacts, tap Assign to Contact, then tap the contact you want to use the ringtone with.

      • To return to the My Songs browser without assigning the ringtone, tap Done to return.

The next time you sync your device, the ringtone also appears in the GarageBand File Sharing area in iTunes. You can drag it to the Tones list to add it to your iTunes ringtone library.

Manage exported GarageBand ringtones

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap a song (or touch and hold a song).

  2. Tap the Action button Share button, then tap Export Song As Ringtone.

    The Export Ringtone panel opens.

  3. Tap Your Ringtones.

    A window opens showing all previously exported ringtones.

  4. To delete existing ringtones, do one of the following:

    • Tap Select, then tap the Delete button for any ringtone you want to delete.

    • Swipe a ringtone in the list, then tap its Delete button.

  5. When you are finished, tap Done.

    To return to the Export Ringtone panel without deleting ringtones (or if there are no existing ringtones), tap Export Ringtone.
