Safari 6/7 (Mavericks): If Safari can’t open a website

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.

If you can’t open a website, try these suggestions.

  • Make sure you’re using the correct address for the webpage.
  • Try entering /index.html or /index.htm at the end of the address.
  • Choose View > Reload Page. If the page still won’t open, reset Safari.

    Reset Safari

  • If your computer or network is protected by a proxy or firewall, make sure your settings are correct in Network preferences. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Network, click Advanced, then click Proxies.
  • Contact the website’s owner to find out if the webpage can be opened using Safari, or if there’s a problem with the web server. Also check if the website uses a protocol other than http or https (Safari can’t open nonstandard addresses).
  • Use the latest version of Safari. Check for updates by choosing Apple Menu > Software Update.

Keep your Mac up to date
