Mail (Mavericks): Address messages
Address a message to one or more people, or to a group. Set options to make sure messages go to the intended recipients, and to help protect their privacy.
You can drag addresses between address fields and messages.
Some mail servers won’t send a message if one of the addresses is incorrect. Remove or correct invalid addresses, then try sending the message again.
Mail uses Contacts to store email addresses. You can import addresses from other email apps by importing them into Contacts.
Use individual addresses
Type names or email addresses, or click + in an address field to choose people from Contacts, then press Enter.
Mail tries to complete addresses as you type them, based on people it finds in your Contacts and Previous Recipients list, and on any network servers it searches.
Use a group address
If you regularly send messages to the same group of people, you can save them as a group in Contacts, then use the group address to email them.
Group contacts
Set the From address
Your messages are sent from the account of the currently selected mailbox. If you have multiple email accounts, you can use a different account.
- Use an account for all messages:
- Choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, then choose an account in “Send new messages from.”
- Use an account for the current message:
- Click the From pop-up menu, then choose an email address.
Highlight unintended recipients
Set an option to help prevent you from sending messages to unintended recipients. When you enter an email address that doesn’t match the specified addresses, it’s shown in red.
- Choose Mail > Preferences, then click Composing.
- Select “Mark addresses not ending with,” then enter one or more safe addresses, separated by commas.
To enter just a domain (the part of the address that comes after the “@” symbol, such as “apple.com”), include the “@” symbol for increased security.
Hide recipients’ addresses
Hide the email addresses of your recipients so they don’t see each other’s addresses.
- Enter your recipients’ email addresses in the Bcc field (leave the To field blank).
- For a group address, choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, then deselect “When sending to a group, show all member addresses.”
Recipients see “Undisclosed-recipients” in the To field.
