Open documents and downloads from stacks

A stack is a folder in the Dock that gives you fast, direct access to the files on your Mac. A stack can contain documents or apps—anything you need to access frequently. When you click a stack, it springs open in a fan or a grid, depending on the number of items it contains. You can drag items in and out of stacks, just as you do with regular folders.

The Dock comes with a Downloads stack already in place, to store items you download from the Internet, receive as attachments to messages, or accept from others via AirDrop.

Example of a stack in the Dock

  • To add stacks of your own, drag folders to the Dock. You can create as many stacks as you like. Stacks are located near the right end of the Dock.
  • To view a stack as a folder, Control-click the stack’s icon in the Dock, then choose Folder in the “Display as” section.
