If you forget your login password and FileVault is on

If FileVault encryption is on and you forget your login password, a user that can administer the computer can reset the login password for your account, or use the recovery key to reset your password.

Resetting your password will also reset your keychain, and you will need to authenticate again to access the items that were stored in your keychain.

If you use FileVault, you cannot use your Apple ID password to reset your login password and you must use the recovery key.

  1. Retrieve the recovery key you copied down when you turned on FileVault disk encryption.

If you cannot find your recovery key but stored it with Apple, contact Apple Support.

  2. Restart your Mac.
  3. On the login screen, click on the account to unlock and reset the login password.
  4. In the password field, click the Help button (?). If you created a password hint, it’s displayed. If you remember your password, enter it now.
  5. If you still need to reset your password, click the bottom line “reset it using your Recovery Key,” then enter your recovery key.
