View file and folder information

You can use Quick Look to preview files and folders, or look for information in Info and Finder windows.

Preview files or folders

Select one or more items, then press the Space bar. To close the preview, press the Space bar again.

View Info windows for files and folders

  • Select one or more items, then choose File > Get Info or press Command (⌘)-I. An information window opens for each item.
  • Select multiple items, hold down the Control key, then choose File > Get Summary Info. A window displays a summary of information about the items.
  • Select an item, then press the Option key as you choose File > Show Inspector. An Inspector window displays information about the selected item. Continue clicking items to see their information in the Inspector window.

View the available disk space and number of items

When you open a window for a disk, folder, or other location, a status bar at the bottom of the window displays the number of items in that location and the amount of available disk space. If the status bar isn’t visible, choose View > Show Status Bar. If the toolbar and sidebar are also not showing, choose View > Show Toolbar.
