iCloud: Write notes

Write notes

You can start new notes using the Notes app on iCloud.com, and you can edit your existing iCloud notes.

Start a new note

  1. Go to Notes on iCloud.com, then click the New Note button at the top of the notes list.

  2. Type your note.

Your new note appears in the notes list, identified by the first few words of the note. Notes are listed by last-modified date, with the most recent note at the top of the notes list.

Edit a note

  1. Go to Notes on iCloud.com, then click a note in the list.

  2. In the note text, select the text you want to edit, or click where you want to add text, then make your changes.

The note moves to the top of the notes list because it’s the most recently modified.

Add or change a list

You can add bulleted, dashed, and numbered lists to notes. If you’re using upgraded notes, you can also turn existing lines into list items.

  1. Go to Notes on iCloud.com, click a note in the list, then do any of the following:

    • Add a list: Click a blank line, then type an asterisk followed by a space, a hyphen followed by a space, or a number followed by a period and a space.

    • Add a list item: Click anywhere in a list item, then press Return.

    • End a list and add a regular paragraph: Click at the end of the last list item, then press Return twice.

    • Turn existing lines into a list: Select the lines, click the Format button in the toolbar, then choose Bulleted List, Dashed List, or Numbered List (you must be using upgraded notes).

    • Increase list level: Click at the beginning of a list item, then press Tab. If you’re using upgraded notes, you can also click anywhere in a list item, then press Command-] (or Control-] in a Windows web browser).

    • Decrease list level: Click at the beginning of a list item, then press Shift-Tab. If you’re using upgraded notes, you can also click anywhere in a list item, then press Command-[ (or Control-[ in a Windows web browser).

Add or change a checklist

If you’re using upgraded notes, you can add a checklist or turn existing lines into a checklist.

  1. Go to Notes on iCloud.com, then click a note in the list.

  2. In the note text, select the lines you want to turn into a checklist, or click where you want to start a checklist, then click the Checklist button in the toolbar.

Change text format

If you’re using upgraded notes, you can change the format of lines or words in a note.

  1. Go to Notes on iCloud.com, then click a note in the list.

  2. In the note text, select the text you want to format.

  3. Click the Format button in the toolbar, then choose the format you want to apply.

To attach items to notes, use the Notes app on iOS devices or Mac computers that use the same iCloud account.

After you add or edit notes on iCloud.com, the changes appear automatically in Notes on your iOS devices and Mac computers that use the same iCloud account. If you’re using upgraded notes, the changes only appear on your devices with iOS 9 or later or OS X v10.11 or later. If you’re not using upgraded notes, you can also view your notes in Microsoft Outlook on a Windows computer.
