OS X Mountain Lion: If you forget your login password

If you forget your login password

To complete some tasks, you must verify your identity by entering your user name and password. Some tasks require the authority of an administrator’s name and password. If you’re in a secure environment where smart cards are required, you must insert your card and enter a personal identification number (PIN) instead of a password.

  • If you forget your password while logging in, click the question mark in the password field to see a hint.

If you don’t see a question mark in the password field, your user password doesn’t have a hint.

To add a password hint to your account, see this help topic:

    Add a password hint

  • If you don’t have a password hint, or if you can’t remember your password after displaying the hint in the login window, you can reset your password.

For more information, see this help topic:

    Reset a login password

  • If you must enter an administrator’s name and password but don’t know them, ask the person who set up your computer for help. If you set up the computer, the user you created during setup is an administrator.
