iPhone parts and service history

If your iPhone has been repaired, you can check your device's parts and service history to find out if the repair used genuine Apple Parts and calibration processes. If you sell or give away your iPhone, the new owner can also learn the device's repair history.

Check the parts and service history of your iPhone

With iOS 15.2 and later, go to Settings > General > About to check the parts and service history of your iPhone.

If your iPhone has been repaired, a Parts and Service History section appears in Settings > General > About. The parts will be shown as either repaired with a genuine Apple part or an unknown part. These messages don't affect your ability to use your iPhone.

  • For iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), you can check if the battery has been replaced.

  • For iPhone 11 models, you can check if the battery or display has been replaced.

  • For iPhone 12 models and later, you can check if the rear system, TrueDepth camera, battery, display, or rear cameras have been replaced.

With iOS versions earlier than iOS 15.2, you can check only if a replacement part is identified as an unknown part.

If a part has been serviced more than once, only the most recent service will appear.

The parts and service history of your iPhone is linked to its serial number. If your iPhone has been repaired in a way that generates a new serial number, you'll find only the parts and service history that's associated with the new serial number.

Information about parts and service history is collected by Apple and stored as part of the device information maintained for your iPhone. This information is used for safety analysis, to verify if parts were properly calibrated, to ensure consumer protection after repair, and to improve future products.

Learn about genuine Apple parts

Genuine Apple parts are designed, tested, and manufactured for Apple’s high quality standards, meeting rigorous safety and performance specifications. These parts are individually calibrated with data uploaded and stored at the time of manufacture, for ease of download after a repair. This process ensures that parts meet performance, security, privacy, and safety expectations.

Certain components, such as the TrueDepth camera that enables Face ID, are designed to keep your sensitive data, including your financial and health information, secure and private. As a precaution, Face ID, Touch ID, and other features that are critical to safety, security, or privacy will be enabled only if the calibration process identifies that a genuine Apple part was used in the repair.

If the service was completed using genuine Apple parts and calibration processes, Genuine Apple Part appears next to the part. If your iPhone has connected to the internet after the service was performed, you can tap the part for more information, including the date of the service.

Learn about unknown parts

An Unknown PartUnknown Part message1 can appear for several reasons, including:

  • The part was replaced with a nongenuine part

  • The part was already used or installed in another iPhone1

  • The part isn't functioning as expected

  • The part calibration was incomplete

If an unknown part is detected, your iPhone will display a one-time notification the first time you unlock it after a repair. Your iPhone will also display a notification in Settings for two weeks.

For display and battery, the notification "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone" indicates that Apple has updated the device information maintained for this iPhone for safety analysis and to improve future products.

If an issue with a component significantly affects the functionality of the device and needs attention to resolve, your iPhone will display a one-time notification. This notification appears the first time that you unlock your iPhone after the issue is detected, and the notification remains in Parts and Service History until you dismiss it.
