iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021, Two ports) Logic Board

Before You Begin

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • 2.5 mm hex nut driver

  • Antenna tool

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Support wedges

  • Torx T3 screwdriver

 Caution

This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, learn how to initiate the System Configuration process.

Removal

  1. Peel off the foam pad from the left speaker flex cable connector. Save the foam pad for reassembly.

  2. Use the black stick to lift the end of the left speaker flex cable off the connector.

  3. Peel off the polyester film tape from the display backlight flex cable connector. Save the polyester film tape for reassembly.

  4. Pinch the sides of the end of the display backlight flex cable and slide it out of the connector.

  5. Use the flat end of the black stick to press and hold the “PUSH” button on the microphone flex cable ZIF connector. Then gently slide the end of the flex cable out of the connector.

  6. Use the flat end of the black stick to press and hold the “PUSH” button on the audio board flex cable ZIF connector. Then gently slide the end of the flex cable out of the connector.

  7. Use the black stick to lift the end of the battery board cable off the connector.

  8. Use the T3 screwdriver to remove two long T3 screws (923-05173) from the overlapping antenna grounding clips.

  9. Use the T3 screwdriver to remove three short T3 screws (923-05174) from the antenna grounding clips near the ends of the antenna coaxial cables.

  10. Use the antenna tool to lift the ends of the three antenna coaxial cables off the connectors.

  11. Peel off the foam on the right speaker cable connector. Save the foam for reassembly.

  12. Use the T3 screwdriver to remove two T3 screws (923-05562) from the USB-C board connector cowling.

  13. Remove the USB-C board connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

  14. Pull the tab to flip up the locking bar on the camera and eDP flex cable (1).

  15. Slide the end of the camera and eDP flex cable straight out of the connector (2).

  16. Use the flat end of the black stick to lift the end of the right speaker flex cable off the connector (1).

  17. Use the flat end of the black stick to lift the end of the USB-C board flex cable off the connector (2).

  18. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to remove six 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-05573) from the logic board in the order shown.

  19. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to remove four 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-05556) from the logic board in the order shown.

  20. Rotate the housing and position it as shown.

  21. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel off the polyester film tape on the fan flex cable.

  22. Use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the fan flex cable connector.

  23. Separate the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one tip under the fan flex cable. Carefully slide the ESD-safe tweezers toward the fan to loosen the adhesive between the fan flex cable and logic board.

    •  Caution: Don’t touch any of the small components on the logic board. Keep the tweezers parallel to the logic board surface to prevent damage.

  24. Gently slide the fan flex cable out of the connector.

    •  Caution: Don’t bend or twist the fan flex cable.

  25. Stand up the computer as shown. Tilt the logic board forward (1). Then lift the logic board out of the housing (2).

Reassembly

  1. Position the logic board in the housing.

    •  Caution: Don’t trap any loose cables under the logic board.

  2. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to partially reinstall six 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-05573) (1–6) into the logic board.

  3. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to partially reinstall four 2.5 mm hex nut screws (923-05556) (1–4) into the logic board.

  4. Ensure that the logic board is aligned in the housing. Then use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to fully reinstall the six 2.5 mm hex screws.

  5. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to fully reinstall the four 2.5 mm hex screws.

  6. Use the blunt end of the antenna tool to press the ends of the three antenna cables to the connectors. Route the shorter antenna cable (2) under the longer antenna cable (3).

  7. Use the T3 screwdriver to reinstall the three short T3 screws (923-05174) into the antenna grounding springs near the ends of the antenna coaxial cables.

  8. Use the T3 screwdriver to reinstall the two long T3 screws (923-05173) into the overlapping antenna grounding springs.

  9. Press the end of the left speaker flex cable to the connector.

  10. Press the foam pad over the left speaker flex cable connector.

    • Important: If a foam pad is installed on the logic board cover, don’t install a foam pad on the connector.

  11. Slide the end of the display backlight cable into the connector.

  12. Press the polyester film tape over the display backlight flex cable connector.

  13. Slide the end of the microphone flex cable into the connector.

  14. Slide the end of the audio board flex cable into the connector.

  15. Press the end of the battery board cable onto the connector.

  16. Slide the end of the fan flex cable into the connector. Then flip down the locking lever.

  17. Press the polyester film tape over the fan flex cable connector.

    • Important: If you’re installing a replacement fan, remove the release liner from the fan flex cable before adhering the polyester film tape.

  18. Slide the camera and eDP flex cable into the connector (1). Then flip down the locking bar (2).

  19. Press the end of the speaker flex cable to the connector (1).

  20. Press the foam pad over the right speaker flex cable connector.

    • Important: If a foam pad is installed on the logic board cover, don’t install a foam pad over the right speaker flex cable connector.

  21. Press the end of the USB-C board flex cable to the connector (2).

  22. Position the USB-C board connector cowling over the connector. Then use the T3 screwdriver to reinstall two T3 screws (923-05562) into the USB-C board connector cowling.
