Put your Mac to sleep

When you’re not using your Mac, you can save energy by putting it to sleep. When your Mac is in sleep, it’s turned on but consumes much less power. It takes your Mac less time to wake from sleep than it does to start up after being turned off.

Put your Mac to sleep

To put your Mac to sleep, do any of the following:

  • Choose Apple menu > Sleep.

  • On a portable Mac, close the display.

  • If you’re using a portable Mac with a CD and DVD drive, press Option-Command-Media Eject key ⏏.

Tip: If your Mac has a Touch Bar, you can add the Sleep button to the Control Strip. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Keyboard, click the Keyboard button, then click Customize Control Strip. Drag the Sleep button onto the Touch Bar.

Wake your Mac from sleep

To wake your Mac, do any of the following:

  • Press a key on the keyboard, or click the mouse or trackpad.

  • On a portable Mac, open the display.

Put your Mac to sleep or wake it using an Apple Remote

If your Mac has an infrared receiver, you may be able to put it to sleep and wake it with an Apple Remote.

  • Put your Mac to sleep: Press and hold the Play/Pause button on the remote.

  • Wake your Mac: Press any button on the remote.

If you connected your Mac to a display, you can customize the function of the display’s power button and the brightness buttons for the Mac in Change Displays Options preferences on Mac.
