Display high-bit characters in Terminal on Mac
To represent foreign language characters, Terminal uses different single-byte and multibyte character encodings. These encodings can use characters with the high–bit set. For example, ISO Latin 1, Shift JIS, or UTF-8.
Note: Before changing character set encodings, make sure programs running in Terminal (shells, editors, and so on) support the character encodings you want to use.
- Go to the Terminal app  on your Mac. on your Mac.
- Choose Terminal > Settings, then click Profiles. 
- In the Profiles list, select a profile. 
- Click Advanced. 
- In the Input section, deselect “Escape non-ASCII input with Control-V.” 
- In the International section, click the “Text encoding” pop-up menu, then choose a character encoding. 
- Select “Set locale environment variables on startup.”
