Group Messages requirements

Retired 8/3/2026.  To be deleted 8/3/2028. Margot Konig says of the first paragraph we don’t need to say this in the context of groups because that's required to send iMessage generally. The second half is irrelevant if we remove first paragraph.

To send a group message using iMessage, at least one recipient in the group must have a phone number or an email address registered with iMessage.

To send a group message to people who have a phone number but aren’t registered with iMessage, you must have an iPhone with iOS 8.1 or later and set it up to get SMS, MMS, and RCS texts on Mac. See the Apple Support article Forward text messages from your iPhone to other devices.
