MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5) Broken Battery Adhesive Removal

Before You Begin

    Warning

  • Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

  • A battery should be replaced only by individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. Improper battery replacement, improper handling of parts, or failure to follow the provided instructions could result in fire, injury, data loss, or damage to the device, parts, or other property.

  • If the battery is dented, expanded, punctured, or otherwise physically damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the device. Replace the top case with battery and keyboard.

  • The battery must be drained to 30 percent using the Battery Drain Tool suite before attempting this procedure. Refer to MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5) Battery Discharge Procedure.

  • Don't reuse or reinstall a loose battery or a battery that has been removed. Replace it with a new battery.

Caution

  • The battery contains six individual battery cells connected by a metal frame. Don’t bend the metal frame or allow it to sag.

  • When removing battery adhesive strips, don’t press on parts in the top case for leverage. Use only the aluminum enclosure if you need to brace yourself while pulling the adhesive strips.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • ESD-safe tweezers (round-tipped)

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Important

If a battery adhesive strip breaks and the strip is visible

  1. Use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp the broken end of the battery adhesive strip.

  2. Keep the ESD-safe tweezers in the channel next to the battery cell. Then gently twist the battery adhesive strip around the end of the tweezers three to four times.

    • Caution: Twist the tweezers so that the top of the tweezers roll toward the battery.

  3. Gently pull the battery adhesive strip away from the battery cell at an angle. Pull the adhesive strip 2 inches at a time. Holding the ESD-safe tweezers parallel to the computer, twist the adhesive strip onto the end of the tweezers so the adhesive lies flat.

    • Caution

      • Don't rub the adhesive strip against the top case frame. Don’t touch the logic board with the tweezers. Don’t press on the battery or other parts.

      • When pulling on the adhesive strip from battery cells 2 and 4, don’t rub the strip against the speaker foam. If the foam is damaged by the strip, replace both speakers.

    • Important: You may need to brace against the aluminum enclosure while you pull on the adhesive strip.

  4. Repeat the pull-and-twist process until the battery adhesive strip is fully removed from under the battery cell.

  5. Return to Battery to remove the remaining battery adhesive strips.

    • For battery cell 1, second adhesive strip, return to removal step 10.

    • For battery cells 2, 3, and 4 adhesive strips, return to removal step 11.

    • For battery cells 5 and 6 adhesive strips, return to removal step 12.

If one or more battery adhesive strip breaks and the strip isn't visible

  1. Return to Battery to remove the remaining battery adhesive strips before attempting to remove the adhesive strip(s) that can't be accessed. Then continue to step 2.

    • For battery cell 1, second adhesive strip, return to removal step 10.

    • For battery cells 2, 3, and 4 adhesive strips, return to removal step 11.

    • For battery cells 5 and 6 adhesive strips, return to removal step 12.

  2. Identify the eight locations where the black stick can be inserted (1-8).

    • Warning: Insert the black stick only in these locations. Don't insert the black stick or other tools in the areas marked in red to avoid puncturing the soft ends of the battery cell and to prevent damage to other parts.

  3. When removing a broken battery adhesive strip from battery cells 1, 2, 3, or 4, slide the black stick under a previously released battery cell as shown, gently tilting up the free end of the black stick to start releasing the adhesive strip.

    • Important: If you're removing a broken adhesive strip from battery cells 5 or 6, insert the flat end of the black stick at the approved location next to the cell where the adhesive strip has already been removed. Gently tilt up the battery cell so you can slide the black stick under it to start releasing the adhesive strip.

  4. Move the black stick forward and continue to gently tilt it up to release more of the battery adhesive strip. Lower the angle of the black stick as necessary as you proceed.

    • Caution: Don't use a computer part as a leverage point for the black stick.

  5. Continue to gently tilt up the battery cell until you can reach under it. Then grasp the battery cell and gently lift it to release the battery adhesive strip.

  6. Reach under the battery cell to manually pull out the broken battery adhesive strip if necessary.

    • Warning: Don't reach under battery cells with ESD-safe tweezers, the black stick, or other tools to remove released adhesive strips.

  7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 to remove any other broken battery adhesive strips. Then return to battery removal step 13 to complete the remaining battery removal steps.
