iMac (24-inch, 2023, Four ports) Fans

Before You Begin

Important:

  • You must replace the fans in pairs.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • 2.5 mm hex nut driver (923-06028)

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm) (923-02995)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Support wedge kit (076-00507)

  • Torx plus 3IP 25 mm bit (923-07593)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

  1. Position the housing with the logic board facing up.

  2. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel back the polyester film tape on the end of the left fan flex cable.

  3. Use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the end of the left fan flex cable connector.

  4. Separate the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one tip under the wide portion of the left fan flex cable as shown to loosen the adhesive between the fan flex cable and the logic board. Then slide the end of the left fan flex cable out of the connector.

    • Caution: Don’t touch any of the small components on the logic board. Keep the tweezers parallel to the logic board to prevent damage.

  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 on the other side of the logic board to disconnect the right fan flex cable.

  6. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-09906) from the fans (one from each fan).

  7. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to remove the nine 2.5 mm hex nut screws from the logic board.

  8. Slightly tilt the logic board away from the housing as shown (1). Then slide the edge of the left fan out from under the logic board to remove the fan from the housing (2).

    • Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

  9. Slightly tilt the logic board away from the housing as shown (1). Then slide the edge of the right fan out from under the logic board to remove the fan from the housing (2).

    • Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

Reassembly

  1. Slightly tilt the logic board away from the housing as shown (1). Then slide the edge of the right fan under the logic board (2). Ensure that the screw holes in the fan and logic board align with the screw holes in the housing.

    • Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

  2. Slightly tilt the logic board away from the housing as shown (1). Then slide the edge of the left fan under the logic board (2). Ensure that the screw holes in the fan and logic board align with the screw holes in the housing.

  3. Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

  4. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-09906) into the fans (one into each fan).

  5. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to reinstall the nine 2.5 mm hex nut screws into the logic board.

  6. Slide the end of the left fan flex cable into the connector (1). Then flip down the locking lever (2).

  7. Press the polyester film tape over the end of the left fan flex cable.

  8. Press the left fan flex cable to adhere it to the logic board.

    • Important: If you’re installing a new fan, first connect the fan flex cable to the logic board. Then remove the release liners from the fan flex cable and press the flex cable to adhere it to the logic board.

  9. Repeat steps 6 through 8 to reinstall the right fan flex cable.
