Business Chat & Privacy

Business Chat is designed to protect your information and enable you to choose what you share.

  • Business Chats are encrypted between your device and Apple’s servers and when Apple transmits them to the business.
  • Apple doesn’t read the content of your Business Chats with other businesses.
  • Your device will suggest which phone numbers are capable of supporting Business Chat by checking Apple’s servers using a privacy-preserving method.

You can use Business Chat to interact with businesses in the Messages app, including making payments using Apple Pay. These messages have a gray background to distinguish them from iMessages and standard SMS. Business Chats are encrypted between your device and Apple’s servers, and when Apple transmits them to the business.

Apple can check if your device is eligible for Apple to initiate a Business Chat conversation with you. When you chat with Apple, Apple will receive a Business Chat ID associated with your Apple ID or phone number. This information, and your conversation, may be used to support your interaction with Apple.

Other businesses cannot start a Business Chat conversation with you; only you can. If you no longer want to receive messages from that business, you can delete the conversation. Once you delete a conversation, that business can no longer communicate with you over Business Chat unless you start a new conversation with them.

When you chat with Apple, Apple will receive a Business Chat ID associated with your Apple ID or phone number. This information, and your conversation, may be used to support your interaction with Apple. If your inquiry relates to Apple Card and is forwarded to Goldman Sachs for servicing, Apple will share information about you and your inquiry with Goldman Sachs so that they may better help you.

When you chat with another business, they are provided a session identifier. Other businesses may also receive limited additional information. For example, if you search in Maps for a bank and start a Business Chat, the business may be informed which branch you chose. This information when held by that business, as well as other information you provide to a business, is governed by their privacy policies. We encourage you to learn about the terms, privacy policies, and practices of businesses you chat with to understand how they use and share this information.

Your device will suggest which phone numbers are capable of supporting Business Chat. When a phone number is selected, your device will ask Apple servers if the number supports Business Chat using a privacy-preserving method. Your device will ask Apple servers for a block of phone numbers which may or may not contain the selected number. Your device will use the information returned by Apple servers to determine whether the numbers support Business Chat.

Apple doesn’t read the content of your Business Chats with other businesses. Information about your Business Chat sessions, such as the duration and number of messages sent, and your conversations with Apple may be used to troubleshoot, prevent fraud, or improve related products and services like Messages and Maps.

If your inquiry relates to Apple Card and is forwarded to Goldman Sachs for servicing, Apple will share information about you and your inquiry with Goldman Sachs so that they may better help you. Goldman Sachs is available to assist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Goldman Sachs is also available by phone at 877-255-5923 or by mail at Goldman Sachs Bank USA, P.O. Box 45400, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115-0400.

At all times, information collected by Apple will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.apple.com/privacy.
