How to add an AirTag to Find My
To help keep track of personal items, like keys or a backpack, you can add an AirTag or other compatible Find My network accessories to Find My. You can add items using AirTag setup or the Find My app.
Add an AirTag to Find My using AirTag setup
To add an AirTag, you need iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. To add an AirTag (2nd generation), you need iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later.
Hold your AirTag near your iPhone or iPad, then tap Connect. If you have more than one AirTag and get the alert "More than one AirTag detected," make sure that you bring only one AirTag near your device at a time.

Select a category to name your AirTag. If you choose Custom Name, select an emoji.

To link your AirTag with your Apple Account, tap Agree or Continue again.
Tap Done.
Add a compatible Find My network accessory or AirTag using the Find My app
To add an AirTag or Find My Network accessory, you need iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. To add an AirTag (2nd generation), you need iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions to connect your compatible Find My network accessory to your iPhone or iPad.
Open Find My on your iPhone or iPad.
Tap Items, then tap .

Tap Add AirTag or Other Item.

Follow the onscreen steps to finish setting up the item.
You can add up to 32 items in Find My, including shared items and accessories. In addition to AirTag and the third-party Find My network accessories listed in the Items tab, AirPods Max count as one item, AirPods and AirPods Pro 1 count as two items, AirPods Pro 2 and later count as three items. If you reach this limit, you might see a message that says you can’t add another item or accessory, or accept a new shared item invitation until you remove an item or accessory.
If you're unable to add your AirTag
First, make sure that your iPhone or iPad has the correct settings. Then try to add your AirTag again.
Check or update your device settings
Update your device to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later.
Open the Settings app, then tap Bluetooth and make sure it's turned on.
Open the Settings app, tap Privacy & Security, then tap Location Services, and make sure that you turned on Location Services. Then scroll down, tap Find My and choose a level of access. For the most accurate location, turn on Precise Location.
Check that your Apple Account setup is finished. Open the Settings app, then tap your name. Check for any alerts to Update Apple Account Settings.
Make sure that you have a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Set up your AirTag again
If the setup animation disappeared, press the side button or Sleep/Wake button on your iPhone to put it to sleep. Then wake and unlock it, and wait 15 seconds. The animation should reappear.
If you're trying to set up more than one AirTag, make sure that only one is near your device at a time.
If you get an error that new items cannot be added, manage the items that you have in Find My. Items include everything in the Items tab and AirPods in the Devices tab. You can add up to 32 items.
