It can take up to 10 seconds for the camera to adjust to low light conditions. This is a normal, short-term condition. When the camera gets used to the conditions, it should operate just fine.
iSight‘s video "stutters" in low light when I turn it on

iSight switches to 15 frames-per-second to improve picture quality in low-light conditions.
