Bonjour for Windows doesn‘t work due to firewall settings

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, Bonjour for Windows may stop working because of a firewall setting change. When you install Service Pack 2, the Windows firewall is turned on by default. This can block port 5353, which is necessary for Bonjour to work properly.

Windows XP systems that don't have any Service Pack installed, or only have Service Pack 1 installed, have the firewall turned off by default. However, you might be affected if you turned on the firewall. Here's how to resolve the issue.

For Service Pack 2 systems

If you've installed Service Pack 2 on your system, you can use Bonjour for Windows to reconfigure the firewall automatically afterwards—you should not manually reconfigure this setting. To do this:

  1. Go to the Control Panel and click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select Bonjour from the list, then click Change/Remove.
  3. Choose Repair, then follow the onscreen instructions.

If repairing doesn't resolve the issue, try uninstalling and reinstalling Bonjour.

  1. Go to the Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select Bonjour from the list, then click Change/Remove.
  3. Choose Remove, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Reinstall Bonjour for Windows by downloading the program from the Apple website, or install it from the media on which it came.

For no Service Pack or Service Pack 1 systems

If you've never installed a Service Pack or installed Service Pack 1 (but not 2), you must configure the firewall manually by following these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Click Networking and Internet Connections.
  3. Click Network Connections.
  4. Double-click the connection you use for iTunes music sharing.
  5. Click Properties.
  6. Click the Advanced tab.
  7. Select the "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet" checkbox.
  8. Click Settings; the Advanced Settings window appears.
  9. Click the Add button; the Service Settings window appears.
  10. In the Service Settings window, enter the following information:
    • Description of Service: Multicast DNS
    • Name or IP address: Enter the Internet address or name of the computer
    • External Port number: 5353
    • Internal Port number: 5353 Select UDP
  11. Click OK to close the Advanced Settings window.
  12. Click OK to close the Connection Properties window.
