PowerPC: "To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" Message

Note: this article applies only to PowerPC-based Mac computers. Intel-based Mac models use Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) instead of Open Firmware.

If you see the message,"To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" this means you need to reset your Mac's basic settings called parameter RAM (PRAM) and Open Firmware.

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.

If this happens every time you turn on your computer, reset the computer's parameter RAM (PRAM).

If the message still appears after you reset PRAM, reset the Open Firmware settings:

  1. Instead of typing "mac-boot" at the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-nvram
  2. Press Return.
  3. At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all
  4. Press Return.

0 > reset-nvram
Press Return
0 > reset-all
Press Return

The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings.
