You can install Mac OS X Server v10.6 on any non-portable Mac that has an Intel processor, at least 10GB of available disk space, and at least 2GB of RAM.
Insert the Mac OS X Server Install Disc and double click the Install Mac OS X Server icon.
The window that appears will display either a button marked "Restart" or button marked "Install".
- If you see a Restart button, it means you can start from the Mac OS X Server DVD. Click Restart, then follow the onscreen instructions to install Mac OS X Server.
- If you see an Install button, it means that your Mac cannot start from the Mac OS X Server DVD, usually because the system version on the DVD is older than the version that shipped with your Mac. In this case you will "promote" your computer from Mac OS X to Mac OS X Server without rebooting. Click Install, then follow the onscreen instructions. Important: when the installation is finished, before you restart, run Software Update and install all available software updates. Then restart and set up your server.
For more information about the installation process, including important instructions for preparing your network infrastructure before installation and setup, see the Mac OS X Server Getting Started guide, which is included with the Mac OS X Server Install Disc.
