About the Mac OS X Server v10.6.2 Update

This software updates Mac OS X Server v10.6 or v10.6.1 to v10.6.2.

Important: Read before installing.

  • Do not interrupt the installation process. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Support Downloads to update.
  • The Mac OS X Server v10.6.2 Update overwrites the /etc/rc.server file. If you have previously made changes to this file, make a backup copy before updating. Any custom sysctl settings should be configured in /etc/sysctl.conf rather than /etc/rc.server. See man rc.server and the /etc/sysctl.conf.default file for details.
  • You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you've modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
  • This update can be installed on non-startup volumes, but you should only do this if the current startup volume has already been updated to Mac OS X Server v10.6.2. The simplest way to avoid issues from an improper installation is to start up from the volume that you wish to update.


There are three ways to update to Mac OS X Server version 10.6.2:

  • Use Software Update
  • Install from a standalone installer
  • Install on a remote server via Server Admin or the softwareupdate command-line utility

Software Update installation

Software Update may have referred you to this article. Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to use Software Update more than once to obtain all available updates.

Standalone installer

If you want to download and manually install the update, an installer is available from Apple Support Downloads. This a useful option if you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once.

Remote installation

If you need to install the update on a remote server, you can do so using the Server Admin application or the softwareupdate command-line tool.

What's included?

This update includes improvements listed below, as well as ones delivered with the Mac OS X Server version 10.6.1 update.

Note: The improvements listed for AFP Client, Client Management, Directory Services (Client) and Mobile Accounts are delivered in the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (client update), but are described in this article for ease of reference. The AFP Client and Directory Services (Client) improvements also apply to Mac OS X Server v10.6.2 when the server is used as a client of another AFP or directory server.

AFP Client

  • Improves compatibility with third-party AFP Servers and Mac OS 9 Personal File Sharing.
  • Improves connection speed to AFP servers when using Kerberos authentication.

Calendar Service

  • Web calendar interface now works when the server is in the Indiana/Indianapolis time zone.

Client Management

  • Fixes a Keychain problem that could prevent managed clients from performing Time Machine backup to a server volume.
  • When Time Machine preferences are managed, the option to back up system files is now properly respected.

Directory Services (Client)

  • Improves creation of mobile accounts for Active Directory users.
  • Fixes an issue with the sudo command when using authenticated Open Directory binding.
  • Improves smart card authentication.

Mail Service

  • Improves reliability of Mail service on servers upgraded from Mac OS X v10.4 or 10.5.
  • Users with high-ASCII characters (such as å, é, or ø) in their names can now set up Mail Rules and Vacation Notices on the server.
  • Mail service now supports chained certificates for SSL encryption.
  • Improves Mail Clustering reliability.

Mobile Accounts

  • Improves reliability of home directory synchronization for users with mobile accounts.
  • Improves creation of mobile accounts for Active Directory users.

Open Directory Service

  • Resolves a keychain error when restoring from an Open Directory archive.

Podcast Producer

  • Podcasts published to a user blog or group wiki now appear in RSS subscriptions in iTunes.
  • Preview is now displayed correctly in Podcast Compose when performing dual-source recording with an external video camera.
  • Podcast Composer can now create workflows with notifications addressed to users in domains with long names, such as ".local" or ".private".
  • The 'podcast --listcatalogs' command now works correctly.

Secure Login Service

  • Addresses an issue that could cause a user's network home directory to be unmounted when that user connects to the server via SSH. For more information see this article.

Server Configuration

  • Instructions in the /etc/sysctl.conf file are now processed after those in the /etc/rc.server file.

Software Update Service

  • Service now works when updates are stored on a volume that has a space in its name.
  • User bandwidth limitations are now correctly applied.

Web Service

  • Improves stability of Web service when scgi_pubsub_module is enabled.

Server Admin

  • Improves stability of Server Admin application.
  • Includes Netboot/Netinstall model filters for Macs introduced in October, 2009.
  • DHCP service status is now reported correctly when viewing the Netboot service overview.
  • Fixes an issue that could cause a cache file to grow out of bounds when Server Admin checks for server software updates from behind an authenticated web proxy.

Server Preferences

  • Improves general usability and reliability of Server Preferences, including the creation and deletion of users and groups.
  • Guest access for File Sharing is now correctly granted when enabled in Server Preferences.

System Image Utility

  • Includes Netboot/Netinstall model filters for Macs introduced in October, 2009.

Workgroup Manager

  • Fixes a user interface issue in Mac OS X Server v10.6.1 that prevented the creation of a users with a period "." in the short name on a Snow Leopard Server.
  • Fixes a user interface issue in Mac OS X Server v10.6.1 that could cause incorrect options to appear when creating users on a Snow Leopard Server.

Xgrid Admin

  • Can now connect to Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard Xgrid controllers.

Additional Improvements
