Ejecting a disc from the PowerBook G4 disc drive

There are three ways to eject a disc from the disc drive of a PowerBook G4 computer.

F12, or Media Eject Key
You can press the F12 key, also known as the Media Eject key (), located at the top-right corner of the keyboard to eject a disc from the DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down this key for a few seconds until the drive ejects the disc.

Restart the Computer
You can eject a disc from the drive by restarting the computer and holding down the trackpad button while the computer starts up. Press the trackpad button until the drive ejects the disc.

Emergency Eject Button (original PowerBook G4 only)
The original PowerBook G4 computer has an emergency eject button. If other means of ejecting the disc do not work, try using the emergency eject button. This is only available on the first PowerBook G4 model.

  1. Make sure the computer is turned on. You cannot use the emergency eject button if the computer is turned off.
  2. Insert the end of a paper clip into the emergency eject hole (located on the right side of the drive slot).
  3. Press the emergency eject button.

Some discs can be warped, which can prevent them from ejecting properly. After ejecting the disc, check for warping, and try inserting and ejecting a known-good disc, such as the Apple Hardware Test CD or a known-good DVD disc.

If none of these methods is successful for removing the disc from your drive, take your computer in to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
