What to do if your PowerBook or iBook does not operate from AC power

Try these steps if your PowerBook or iBook computer won't operate when the AC adapter is connected.

  1. Make sure the AC adapter is the correct one for your computer. Using an adapter that was not designed for your specific PowerBook is not recommended and there's no guarantee it will work. You can easily tell if you have the correct power adapter.
  2. Unplug the adapter from the wall, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in again. This step will reset the adapter. Verify that the electrical outlet is working and all connections are tight. Connect the AC adapter to a known good power outlet. (If you need to, plug in a lamp to make sure the outlet is working.) Firmly insert the power adapter's cord into the power adapter, then make sure the DC connector is fully inserted into the computer's power port. If you have an Apple Portable Power Adapter with the green indicator in the DC connector, make sure the connector is fully inserted. The green light will turn on before the DC connector is completely inserted, which can make you think it's correctly plugged in when it's not.
  3. Reset the Power Manager.
  4. Connect the adapter to the PowerBook, wait 5 seconds, then press the power button.
  5. Shut down the computer, remove the battery, and try to turn the computer on from the power adapter only.
  6. If the issue continues, try another power adapter if available. If not, arrange for service.
  7. If another adapter resolves the issue, call Apple to order a replacement power adapter.
