The information in this document applies only to the first generation of Xserve RAID, which was announced in February 2003. For information on how to perform these steps using the second generation of Xserve RAID, see "Xserve RAID (SFP): Connecting to a host computer using fiber optic cable."
The Fiber Channel interface supports connectivity over both optical and copper cabling. Optical cabling has the benefit of supporting much longer distances between devices than is possible using copper cables. For connecting devices over distances greater than those allowed by the 2.9m cable that comes with the Apple Fibre Channel PCI card, Apple recommends optical cabling.
A switch is required to connect the two systems using the Fiber Channel interface in the Xserve RAID and the Apple Fibre Channel PCI card in the host computer.
Connect the cables as numbered above.
- You need two HSSDC2-to-SFP (small form factor pluggable) copper cables to connect between the Xserve RAID and the
- Fibre Channel switch. These cables are included with the Apple Fibre Channel PCI card, which is available from Apple.
- The Fibre Channel switch and the host have SFP connectors, so you need up to four SFP-to-LC transceivers.
- Between the SFP-to-LC transceivers are the LC-to-LC Fiber optic cables.
