Upgrade issues

Tables saved in previous versions of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks
A new feature in AppleWorks 6 is the ability to create tables. When you save an AppleWorks 6 document that contains a table in AppleWorks 5, ClarisWorks 4, or ClarisWorks for Kids format, the table is converted to a non-editable object.

Button Bar buttons
You must re-create Button Bar buttons created with earlier versions of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks. (For instructions, use the Search feature or the index of AppleWorks Help.)

Dictionary, hyphenation, or thesaurus files from previous versions of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks
AppleWorks 6 does not recognize dictionary, hyphenation, or thesaurus files (including user dictionary files) from previous versions of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks. For user dictionaries, however, you can avoid having to reenter terms manually. To do so, use your old version of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks to export the terms from an old user dictionary into a text file, then use AppleWorks 6 to import the terms from that text file into a new user dictionary. For instructions, see the topic "Working with dictionaries" in AppleWorks Help.

Headers in spreadsheets created in AppleWorks or ClarisWorks versions earlier than 6.0
If a spreadsheet document created in a version of ClarisWorks or AppleWorks earlier than 6.0 includes a header, the header may be truncated when the document is printed. If this happens, change the header's font to a Mac OS X font such as Helvetica or Times, or to a non-bitmapped font such as Arial.

Software issues

AppleWorks cannot be installed on a UFS-formatted hard disk
AppleWorks 6.2 cannot be installed on a hard disk or disk partition that has been initialized in the UFS format. To install AppleWorks, select a Mac OS Standard or Mac OS Extended disk or partition. (You may have to reinitialize your disk. Be sure to back up all of your data first, because reinitializing a disk erases it.)

AppleWorks document appears inactive
If you activate a non-AppleWorks window (such as a Finder window) while an AppleWorks dialog is open, clicking in an AppleWorks window may not activate it again. To solve this issue, click the AppleWorks application icon in the Dock.

Using the Equation Editor
When you insert an Equation Editor equation into an AppleWorks document, a message may tell you that you must install the Symbol font included with Equation Editor. You can ignore this message.

User dictionary word limit
User dictionaries in AppleWorks 6 can contain a maximum of 2883 words. If you import a text file into a user dictionary that would cause the total word count to exceed 2883, the excess words will not be added to the user dictionary.

Issues accessing Web content
If your network connection is interrupted while your computer is in sleep, you may have issues connecting to the Internet after you wake the computer. If this occurs, either wait a while or quit and reopen AppleWorks.

To avoid this issue, make sure your Internet connection is working before you access Internet content in AppleWorks.

Opening the same document on multiple computers in a networked environment
In a networked environment, multiple users may try to open the same document at the same time. Usually, users will be advised that the document is already in use, and asked if they would like to open a copy of it instead.

Uninstalling AppleWorks
To use the Uninstall option of the AppleWorks 6 Installer, make sure the AppleWorks 6 application folder is located at the top level of your hard disk (visible when you open the icon for your hard disk and not within another folder).

If the AppleWorks 6 application folder is not at the top level of your hard disk, performing an uninstall removes some components but doesn't remove the AppleWorks 6 application folder, even though you see a message reporting the uninstall action was successful.

Updating to AppleWorks 6.2.9 on Mac OS 9
If you downloaded the AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater from Apple's Web site and attempt to update AppleWorks while running Mac OS 9, installation may be unsuccessful. If this happens, unmount the updater virtual disk and double-click the .smi file so that it mounts itself. You can also turn off the preference for disk image mounting in StuffIt Expander to avoid this issue.

AppleWorks isn't installed in the Applications folder while running Mac OS X v10.1
In some situations, the Applications folder may have been locked or had the incorrect permissions assigned to it after Mac OS X 10.1 was installed. If this is the case, when you install AppleWorks, you'll see a warning that says, "The item '<filename>' could not be moved because 'Applications' cannot be modified." You can correct this issue by following the instruction in this document:
Mac OS X 10.1: Applications Folder Locked or Cannot Be Modified

Hardware compatibility issues

Setting monitor colors
If your monitor is set to display 256 colors (using the Displays pane of System Preferences), switching to something other than the Default color palette in the Accents window can cause the menu bar and other screen elements to change color.

Printing
If you get unexpected results when printing, be sure to download the latest printer drivers from your printer manufacturer's Web site.

Printing the Extras document on the Web tab of Starting Points
When you print the Extras document on the Web tab of Starting Points, you may see an error message with certain printers. If this happens, follow these steps to print the Extras document:
1 Choose Page Setup from the File menu.
2 Click OK.
3 Choose Print from the File menu.

Printing rotated text on non-PostScript printers
Rotated text printed on a non-PostScript (raster) printer may appear jagged.

To smooth the type:
1 Choose Preferences from the AppleWorks application menu, then choose General from the submenu.
2 Choose Text from the Topic pop-up menu.
3 In the Options area, select the Fractional Character Widths option.

Turning on this option may cause documents to look slightly different when printed. (For example, line breaks may change.)

Third-party software issues

Printing on Hewlett-Packard USB printers
If you're using a Hewlett-Packard USB (Universal Serial Bus) printer and you don't see the expected dialog boxes when printing an AppleWorks document, you need to upgrade your printer driver.

The following Hewlett-Packard USB printers may be affected:

• HP DeskWriter 600, 660, 680, 690 series printer
• HP DeskJet 610, 612, 670, 680, 690 series printer
• HP DeskJet 850, 855, 870 series printer

AppleScript issues

Using AppleScript with AppleWorks
AppleWorks 6 supports the automation and extension of AppleWorks features using AppleScript technology. Information about scripting AppleWorks is in the Scripts folder within the AppleWorks 6 folder.

Using the Activate command in the Script Editor
When working with AppleScripts, avoid running a script from within the Script Editor application if the script includes a command to activate AppleWorks.

For best results, run the script
• from the Script Editor, but send events to AppleWorks in the background (avoid the Activate command)
• from within AppleWorks using, for example, a Button Bar button or the AppleScript menu
• as a standalone AppleScript applet

Checking spelling in documents written in Spanish
To check the spelling of AppleWorks documents written in Spanish, you can use supplemental dictionary files provided on the AppleWorks 6 CD. These files are in the Spanish Dictionaries folder in the AppleWorks Extras folder. For information on how to use these dictionaries, see the topic "Working With Dictionaries" in AppleWorks Help.
