Create and share playlists

You can create playlists with music from the Apple Music catalog or your own collection, then share them with friends. You can also save playlists that people share with you to your library.

Create a playlist

You can create playlists on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch; your Mac or PC; or your Android device.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. In the Music app, find a song that you want to start your playlist with. Long press or use 3D Touch on the song, then choose "Add to a Playlist" > New Playlist.
  2. Give your playlist a name, description, and cover image, then add more songs: Tap the Add Music button Add Music, then search to find a song from your Library or the Apple Music catalog, or browse through songs under Library. When you find a song that you want to add, tap the Add to Playlist button.
  3. When you're finished adding songs, tap Done.

By default, songs that you add to playlists don't automatically add to your Library. If you want to add each song to your Library, you can change your settings.

On your Mac or PC

  1. In iTunes, find a song that you want to start a playlist with. Move your pointer over it, then click three horizontal blue dots and choose "Add to Playlist" > New Playlist.
  2. Click the name and cover image to edit the title or add an image. If you want to add a description, click the More button , then choose Add Description.
  3. Add more songs to your playlist by searching or browsing your Library or the Apple Music catalog. When you find a song that you want to add to the playlist, click three horizontal blue dots and choose "Add to Playlist" > [your new playlist].

By default, songs that you add to playlists don't automatically add to your Library. If you want to add each song to your Library, you can change your settings.

On your Android device

  1. In the Apple Music app, find a song that you want to start a playlist with. Long press on the song, then tap "Add to a Playlist" > New Playlist.
  2. Give your playlist a name, description, and cover image, then add more songs: Tap pink circle with white plus sign in it Add Music, then search to find a song from your Library or the Apple Music catalog, or browse through your Library. When you find a song that you want to add, tap white box with pink border. (You'll see white check mark in pink box when the song is selected.) Tap pink checkmark at the top of the screen when you're finished selecting songs.
  3. To save your playlist, tap pink checkmark again. 

By default, songs that you add to playlists don't automatically add to your Library. If you want to add each song to your Library, you can change your settings.


Share a playlist through Apple Music

If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can make your playlists public and send them to friends.

Make a playlist public

When you create a playlist, make sure to turn on "Show on My Profile and in Search" to make your playlist public. When you make a playlist public, people can find it using Search.

Send a playlist to a friend

You can send your playlists to friends through Messages, Mail, Twitter, Facebook, using AirDrop, and more. To share a playlist, find the playlist that you want to share, then follow these steps:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Tap the More button, then Share Playlist the Share Playlist button.
  • On your Mac or PC: Click the More button, then Share Playlist.
  • On your Android device, tap the More Options button , then Share Playlist Share Playlist to see your sharing options.

When you choose how you want to share your playlist, a new window opens in the app that you chose and a link to your playlist appears. In some apps, you can add a message before sending your playlist.

Save an Apple Music playlist

You can add any public playlist to your Library, including playlists that you find in the For You section of Apple Music or playlists your friends send to you. To save playlists to your Library, find the playlist that you want to save, then tap or click  Add.

By default, the songs in the playlist stay separate from your main Library. If you want to add each song in the playlist to your Library, you can change your settings.

If Apple or the owner of the playlist adds or removes any songs from a playlist that you save, the saved playlist in your Library will automatically refresh to reflect the updates.
