Create and share playlists

You can create playlists with music from the Apple Music catalog or your own collection, then share them with friends. You can also save playlists that people share with you to your library.

Create a playlist

You can create playlists on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch; your Mac or PC; or your Android phone.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. In the Music app, find a song that you want to start your playlist with. Long press or use 3D Touch on the song, then choose "Add to a Playlist" > New Playlist.
  2. Give your playlist a name, description, and cover image, then add more songs: Tap Green circle with a plus sign in it Add Music, then search to find a song from your Library or the Apple Music catalog, or browse through songs under Library. When you find a song that you want to add, tap white circle with pink plus sign in it .
  3. When you're finished adding songs, tap Done.

By default, songs that you add to playlists don't automatically add to your Library. If you want to add each song to your Library, you can change your settings.

On your Mac or PC

  1. In iTunes, find a song that you want to start a playlist with. Move your pointer over it, then click three horizontal blue dots and choose "Add to Playlist" > New Playlist.
  2. Click Library at the top of the iTunes window, then click your new playlist in the left sidebar. Click the name and cover image to edit the title or add an image. If you want to add a description, click blue circle with three dots in a horizontal line on it , then choose Add Description.
  3. Add more songs to your playlist by searching or browsing your Library or the Apple Music catalog. When you find a song that you want to add to the playlist, click three horizontal blue dots and choose "Add to Playlist" > [your new playlist].

By default, songs that you add to playlists don't automatically add to your Library. If you want to add each song to your Library, you can change your settings.

On your Android phone

  1. In the Apple Music app, find a song that you want to start a playlist with. Tap three horizontal pink dots , then "Add to a Playlist" > New Playlist.
  2. Give your playlist a name, description, and cover image, then add more songs: Tap pink circle with white plus sign in it Add Songs, then search to find a song from your Library or the Apple Music catalog, or browse through your music. When you find a song that you want to add, tap black plus sign.
  3. When you're finished adding songs, tap black checkmark . 

By default, songs that you add to playlists don't automatically add to your Library. If you want to add each song to your Library, you can change your settings.

Share a playlist

You can make your playlists public and send them to friends.

Make a playlist public

When you create a playlist, make sure to turn on "Show on My Profile and in Search" to make your playlist public. When you make a playlist public, people can find it using Search.

Send a playlist to a friend

You can send your playlists to friends through Messages, Mail, Twitter, Facebook, using AirDrop, and more. To share a playlist, find the playlist that you want to share, then follow these steps:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Tap , then Share Playlist .
  • On your Mac or PC: Click , then Share Playlist.
  • On your Android phone, tap the Share icon   to see your sharing options.

When you choose how you want to share your playlist, a new window opens in the app that you chose and a link to your playlist appears. In some apps, you can add a message before sending your playlist.

Save a playlist

You can add any public playlist to your Library, including playlists that you find in the For You section of Apple Music or playlists your friends send to you. To save playlists to your Library, find the playlist that you want to save, then tap white plus sign and the word add on a pink background  on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android phone or white plus sign and the word add on a blue background on your Mac or PC.

By default, the songs in the playlist stay separate from your main Library. If you want to add each song in the playlist to your Library, you can change your settings.

If Apple or the owner of the playlist adds or removes any songs from a playlist that you save, the saved playlist in your Library will automatically refresh to reflect the updates.
