Use Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) 3.9 to upgrade client software

Use the Remote Management software that comes on your Mac to upgrade client software remotely.

  1. In the Remote Desktop (admin app) preferences, go to the Security pane.

  2. Select the "Allow communication with older clients (less secure)” checkbox. After you upgrade your clients to Apple Remote Desktop 3.9 or later, you can deselect this checkbox for better security.

  3. In the Remote Desktop window, select the client that you want to upgrade.

  4. Choose Manage > Send UNIX Command.

  5. In the Unix command window, type the command to upgrade the client software. For example, to upgrade the client software to version 3.9, type this command:

    /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install RemoteDesktopClient-3.9.0

  6. In the text box next to “Run command as: User", type root.

  7. Click the Send button.
