Use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect your new MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports to older devices that use Thunderbolt (10Gbps) or Thunderbolt 2 (20Gbps). For example, this is the adapter that you should use to connect your MacBook Pro to an Apple Thunderbolt Display or a third-party Thunderbolt 2 storage device.

The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter is for 2016 MacBook Pro models, and isn't compatible with MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) and later.

Using the adapter with your MacBook Pro (Late 2016)

You can use the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect your MacBook Pro (Late 2016) to these devices:

  • Apple Thunderbolt Display*
  • LG Thunderbolt-enabled Displays using the Thunderbolt input
  • Thunderbolt bus-powered devices
  • Thunderbolt self-powered devices
  • Mac computers that have Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2
  • Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
  • Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter**

*The Apple Thunderbolt Display doesn't provide power through this adapter to your MacBook Pro (Late 2016).
**Support for Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter is limited to devices that require less than 10W of power.

The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter doesn't support connections to these devices:

  • Apple LED Cinema Display
  • DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort displays
  • DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort adapters, such as Mini DisplayPort to HDMI or Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapters
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) and later

Using the adapter with your Mac that has Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 ports

Your Mac must be running macOS Sierra to work with the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.

You can use the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect your Mac with Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 ports to these devices:

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) self-powered devices, such as Thunderbolt 3 displays and Thunderbolt 3 self-powered hard drives
  • Mac computers that have Thunderbolt 3

The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter doesn't support connections to these devices:

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) bus-powered devices
  • USB-C devices, displays, and adapters that don't have Thunderbolt
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) and later
