Stream your iTunes Store movies or TV shows

Starting with iOS 10, tvOS 10, and Windows iTunes 12.5, you can stream select iTunes Store movies and TV shows over broadband or cellular without downloading the video to your device.

Stream TV shows or movies

If streaming is available for a movie or TV show you buy or rent, the video instantly plays when you choose  or . These videos stream at the highest quality definition based on your device setting and Internet speed. 

When you stream your purchased movies, you can also stream any available Extras content. 

About video playback

If you want to stream HD content make sure that you set Playback Quality to Best Available. High quality playback requires a faster Internet connection and uses more data if using Wi-Fi or Cellular Data. 

If you want to stream SD content, make sure that you set Playback Quality to Good. This is the recommended setting if you subscribe to a limited data plan.
 

     

Set Playback Quality on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Tap Settings, then scroll down and tap Videos or TV.
  2. Tap Playback Quality.
  3. To set the preferences for Wi-Fi, tap Wi-Fi. If you want the best quality available for your network, set Playback Quality to Best Available.
    To set the preferences for Cellular, tap Cellular. If you want the best quality available for your network, set Playback Quality to Best Available.

These settings only affect streaming video and won't change the quality of downloaded content.

Set Playback Quality on your Apple TV

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > iTunes movies and TV shows > Video Resolution.
  2. Select Best Available if you want the best quality for video playback.

     

Set Playback Quality on your Mac or PC

  1. Launch iTunes on your computer and go to Preferences.
  2. Click Playback.
  3. Set your Preferred Video Version. If you want the best quality video version for your network speed, set it to Best Available.

If you have playback issues

If you have video playback issues when you stream an iTunes Store movie or TV show, try the following solutions: 

  • If you use a Wi-Fi network, try downloading the video to the device for playback. Downloading the video on cellular data isn't supported.
  • If you don't see the Play arrow in the movies product page, make sure Show iTunes Purchases is turned on. Tap Settings, then scroll down and tap Videos. Turn on Show iTunes Purchases.
  • If you don't see purchased movies in the Videos app, make sure Show iTunes Purchases is turned on. Tap Settings, then scroll down and tap Videos. Turn on Show iTunes Purchases. 
  • If your purchased movie, TV show, or rental content won’t play, report a problem.
