If you see a “Windows installer package” error message when you try to uninstall iTunes from your PC

Try to repair the software through the Windows Control Panel. If that doesn't work, you might need to uninstall the software, then install it again.

The following error message might appear if you can't uninstall iTunes or one of its related programs because of issues with Windows:

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

To fix the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Open "Uninstall a Program" from the Windows Control Panel.
    Windows 7
    Windows 8
    Windows 10
  2. Select the program that you’re trying to remove. 
  3. Select Repair. Follow the prompts to complete the repair process.
  4. Try to uninstall the program. 
  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each program that you want to uninstall.
  6. After you uninstall all iTunes programs, reinstall iTunes.

If you still can’t uninstall the program, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility. 

  1. Make sure you have the latest Windows updates installed. 
  2. Visit the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility website.

    Windows 10 users:
    1. Make sure that you're using Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge to visit the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility website. 
    2. From the upper-right corner of the browser window, open the Action Menu, then select F12 Developer Tools.
    3. Select the Emulation Tab, then select Internet Explorer 10 in the User Agent String menu.

       
  3. Click Run Now. If the utility doesn’t open automatically, open it from your downloads folder. The utility's name will start with MicrosoftFixIt.ProgramInstallUninstall. 
  4. Read the license agreement. If you agree to the terms, click Accept. The utility runs. 
  5. On the first screen of the utility, select "Detect problems and apply the fixes for me (Recommended)."
  6. When asked if you're having problems installing or uninstalling a program, select Uninstalling.
  7. Select the program that you want to uninstall.
  8. Click Next.
  9. When asked if you want to Uninstall and cleanup, select "Yes, try uninstall."
    The utility tries to uninstall the program. Depending on the size of the software package the utility is trying to uninstall and the speed of the your computer, the uninstall process might take five minutes or more. If the utility is successful, you'll see a "Troubleshooting is complete" message.
  10. Close the utility.
  11. Repeat steps 2 through 10 for each program that you can't uninstall.
  12. After you uninstall all iTunes programs, reinstall iTunes.
