Get public transit directions in Maps on your Mac

Maps in El Capitan includes public transportation routes and schedules for many cities. Routes include detailed walking, subway, train, bus, and ferry directions.

Find routes that use public transit in your area

To get an overview of public transit routes in your area, click the Transit button in the upper-right corner of the window. To plan a route, follow these steps:

  1. Click Directions in the toolbar, then enter a start and end location.
  2. Click the Transit button.
  3. You can use the pop-up menu to change your desired departure time from Leaving Soon to preset periods later in the day. Or choose Custom to plan based on a specific departure or arrival time. 
  4. Maps shows a summary of each route to your destination. Click Details to see information about each segment of a route, including the type of transportation, distances, departure and arrival times, number of stops, and more. 

Send your route to your iOS device

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices with iOS 9 can view routes that include transit information.

  1. On your Mac, click Share   in Maps, then choose your device from the menu.
  2. On your iOS device, tap the notification to open the route in Maps.
