If you haven't updated your devices

If you have supervised iOS devices with Apple Configurator and they're enrolled in Mobile Device Management (MDM) you can update them to iOS 8.3 over the air.

If your devices aren't enrolled in MDM, you should update them to iOS 8.3 by connecting the devices to the Configurator workstation:

  1. In Apple Configurator choose the Supervise tab, select "Update iOS: When update is available."
  2. If you don't want the current user information stored on the device overwritten from a backup, choose "Don’t restore backup" from the Restore pop-up menu.
  3. Click the Refresh or Apply button.

If you've already updated your devices

If you've already updated a Configurator-supervised device to iOS 8.3 over the air, you need to do one of the following before you restart the device:

Enroll the device in Mobile Device Management, or use these steps to finish updating the device:

  1. In Apple Configurator choose the Supervise tab.
  2. If you don't want the current user information stored on the device overwritten from a backup, choose "Don’t restore backup" from the Restore pop-up menu.
  3. Click the Refresh or Apply button.
  4. Restart the device.

If you previously restarted a device

If you previously restarted a device and it alternates between a black screen and Apple logo repeatedly, follow these steps to update and restore the device.

  1. Connect the device's USB cable to your Apple Configurator workstation.
  2. Hold the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  3. When you see the Connect to iTunes screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try the previous steps again.
  4. Open Apple Configurator and Refresh the device.

This process erases the device and installs iOS 8.3. Configurator restores a backup to the device if you have one selected, or you can restore the device from an iCloud backup after installation.
