About Device Enrollment

Learn how Device Enrollment can help you simplify the initial setup and deployment of your devices.

You can use Device Enrollment to automate Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment and simplify initial device setup. It lets you supervise devices during activation without touching them, and lock MDM enrollment for ongoing management.

Device Enrollment availability

Device Enrollment is available to businesses through the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and to schools through Apple School Manager. Find out which Apple programs for education and business are available in your country or region.

Your organization can enroll in the Device Enrollment Program or Apple School Manager if it buys its Apple devices:

  • Directly from Apple
  • From a participating Apple Authorized Reseller
  • From a cellular carrier

The person who enrolls your organization in the program must have the authority to accept the program’s terms and conditions.

Devices that you can enroll

You can enroll any Apple Mac, iOS device, or Apple TV (4th Generation) that you purchased on or after March 1, 2011. To enroll a Mac, iOS device, or Apple TV that you purchased from a participating Apple Authorized reseller or carrier, add it to your DEP instance. Make sure that all iOS devices use iOS 7 or later, all Mac computers use OS X Mavericks 10.9 or later, and all Apple TVs (4th generation) run tvOS 10.2 or later.

Enroll your devices

If you buy your devices directly from Apple, you provide an Apple Customer Number to enroll them. If you buy your devices from a participating Authorized Reseller or carrier, you provide a DEP Reseller ID, an Apple Customer Number, or both.

After you provide an Apple Customer Number and it’s verified: 

  • You can manage any device under that Apple Customer Number that you've purchased from Apple since March 1, 2011. 
  • You can manage any new device that you buy as it ships.

After you provide a DEP Reseller ID: 

  • When your enrollment is approved, you receive a DEP Customer ID.
  • You give your DEP Customer ID to your reseller.
  • The reseller uses your DEP Customer ID to submit information about your purchases to Apple. 

Then, your new purchases are available for management. Your previous purchases, as far back as March 1, 2011, might also be available for management. This depends on the sales history that your reseller can provide to Apple.

Manage and supervise the devices that you enroll

You can link one or more MDM servers to the Device Enrollment Program or Apple School Manager and assign devices to each server. Use your MDM solution to choose management options for your devices, including whether to supervise them and lock MDM enrollment.

If you've set up automatic enrollment in MDM settings, when you assign a device to a server, it’s automatically enrolled in MDM the next time that it’s activated. If a device is already activated, you can erase and then restore the device to trigger MDM enrollment.

If you restore from a backup while setting up an enrolled device

This might affect supervision and device management. When you restore a backup that you made from the same device, it applies the supervision and management settings from the backup. If you restore a backup that you made from a different device, it applies the supervision and management settings that the Device Enrollment Program or Apple School Manager designates. 

For example: 

  • You back up a device that is not supervised. 
  • You assign that device to a server in the Device Enrollment Program or in Apple School Manager. 
  • You use MDM to designate it as supervised and locked into management. 

If you erase the device and restore the backup, the device remains unsupervised and the user can remove management. If you restore the backup to a different device that is assigned to the server, the device is supervised and the user can’t remove management.
