You can use Device Enrollment to automate Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment and simplify initial device setup. It lets you supervise devices during activation without touching them, and lock MDM enrollment for ongoing management.
Device Enrollment availability
Device Enrollment is available to businesses through the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and to schools through Apple School Manager. Find out which Apple programs for education and business are available in your country or region.
Your organization can enroll in the Device Enrollment Program or Apple School Manager if it buys its Apple devices:
- Directly from Apple
- From a participating Apple Authorized Reseller
- From a cellular carrier
The person who enrolls your organization in the program must have the authority to accept the program’s terms and conditions.
Devices that you can enroll
You can enroll any Mac, iOS device, or Apple TV (4th generation or later) that you purchased from Apple with a direct purchasing account, or from an Apple Authorized Reseller or carrier, on or after March 1, 2011*.
Make sure that all iOS devices use iOS 7 or later, all Mac computers use OS X Mavericks 10.9 or later, and all Apple TVs (4th generation or later) run tvOS 10.2 or later.
* The actual date of device eligibility is determined by your participating Apple Authorized Reseller or carrier sales’ history, but the date can’t be before March 1, 2011.
Enroll your devices
Based on how your devices are purchased, we'll need some additional information from you when you enroll. If you've purchased your devices directly from Apple, you'll provide your organization's Apple Customer Number to enroll them. For any devices purchased from an Apple Authorized Reseller or carrier, we'll need their DEP Reseller ID.
If you represent a large organization, like a school district, you might have more than one Apple Customer Number or DEP Reseller ID. You can add multiple Apple Customer Numbers, DEP Reseller IDs, or both when you enroll, or any time after you enroll.
To get your Apple Customer Number, DEP Reseller ID, or learn how to manually add your devices, choose your method of purchase and follow the steps listed here:
If your devices are purchased directly from Apple
If you buy your devices from Apple with a direct purchasing account, we'll need your organization's Apple Customer Number to enroll them. If you don’t know your Apple Customer Number, contact your purchasing agent, finance department, or Apple Sales team for more help.
When you provide an Apple Customer Number, Apple verifies that the Apple Customer Number belongs to your organization. After your Apple Customer Number is verified:
If your devices are purchased from a participating Apple Authorized Reseller or carrier
If you buy your devices from a participating Authorized Reseller or carrier, provide the reseller or carrier's DEP Reseller ID to enroll them. If you don't know your DEP Reseller ID, contact the reseller or carrier directly.
After you provide a DEP Reseller ID:
- When your enrollment is approved, you receive a DEP Customer ID.
- You give your DEP Customer ID to your reseller.
- The reseller uses your DEP Customer ID to submit information about your purchases to Apple. This can include previous purchases, as far back as March 1, 2011, if your reseller provides the sales history to Apple.
- Devices are available for management after the the reseller submits your purchases to Apple. If purchases do not appear available for DEP management, contact your reseller or carrier directly.
Manually add your devices
You can also choose to manually add iOS and tvOS devices to your Device Enrollment with Apple Configurator 2 (version 2.5 or later), even if the devices weren’t purchased directly from Apple, an Apple Authorized Reseller, or an authorized cellular carrier.
When you set up a device that has been manually enrolled, it behaves like any other enrolled device, with mandatory supervision and MDM enrollment. However, the user has a 30-day provisional period to remove the device from enrollment, supervision, and MDM.
To find out how to manually add your devices, see the Apple Configurator 2 Help guide.
Manage and supervise the devices that you enroll
You can link one or more MDM servers to the Device Enrollment Program or Apple School Manager and assign devices to each server. Use your MDM solution to choose management options for your devices, including whether to supervise them and lock MDM enrollment.
If you've set up automatic enrollment in MDM settings, when you assign a device to a server, it’s automatically enrolled in MDM the next time that it’s activated. If a device is already activated, you can erase and then restore the device to trigger MDM enrollment.
When you add a device manually with Apple Configurator 2, it appears in ASM or DEP under Devices Added by Apple Configurator 2. To complete the addition of your device, you must manually assign it to an MDM server.
If you restore from a backup while setting up an enrolled device
This might affect supervision and device management. When you restore a backup that you made from the same device, it applies the supervision and management settings from the backup. If you restore a backup that you made from a different device, it applies the supervision and management settings that the Device Enrollment Program or Apple School Manager designates.
- You back up a device that is not supervised.
- You assign that device to a server in the Device Enrollment Program or in Apple School Manager.
- You use MDM to designate it as supervised and locked into management.
If you erase the device and restore the backup, the device remains unsupervised and the user can remove management. If you restore the backup to a different device that is assigned to the server, the device is supervised and the user can’t remove management.
