OS X: Device using Internet Sharing is not able to connect to the Internet

After creating a Wi-Fi network using Internet Sharing, computers and devices can connect to the Wi-Fi network, but may not be able to connect to the Internet.

This can happen if you make a subsequent change in Sharing preferences to Internet Sharing while the Mac is already providing a Wi-Fi network connection.

  1. In Sharing preferences, uncheck Internet Sharing.
  2. Restart your Mac.
  3. Create a new Internet Sharing network with the settings you wish, for example with Security set to WPA2 Personal instead of None.
