Mac mini (Mid 2011 and later) and iMac (Late 2012): Bluetooth keyboard may not pair during Setup Assistant

When using Setup Assistant to configure your Mac mini or iMac for the first time, the Bluetooth keyboard may have difficulty pairing.

You can use a wired keyboard to configure the Mac mini or iMac with the Setup Assistant. If a wired keyboard is not available, you can follow these steps:

  1. Turn the wireless keyboard Off.
    • Hold the power button of the keyboard in until the green LED on the top of the keyboard goes out.
  2. Restart the computer.
    • Use the paired Mouse (or a wired Mouse) to choose Shutdown from the Apple () menu. You can also hold in the Power Button of the computer to shut it down.
    • Press the Power button to start the computer. 
  3. Use the mouse to select the language you would like.
  4. When the keyboard setup assistant appears, press and hold the power button on the wireless keyboard until the keyboard setup assistant presents a code on the display. Make sure the green LED on the wireless keyboard is flashing (discoverable mode) while you press the keyboard's power button. Once the code is present on the display, release the power button on the keyboard.
  5. Enter the code you see on the display using the wireless keyboard and press Return. Note: No visible feedback appears on the screen while you enter the code.

The computer and the wireless keyboard should now be paired. If not, repeat the steps above.
