How to create custom ringtones in GarageBand for your third-party phone

Learn how use GarageBand to create custom ringtones for your mobile phone if it's not manufactured by Apple.

Create a custom ringtone for your third-party phone

  1. Create or open an existing GarageBand song.
  2. Use Cycle Mode to choose which portion of your GarageBand song you'd like to use for your ringtone. Note that ringtones are usually 30-40 seconds long. Check your mobile phone's documentation for how long your ringtone should be.
  3. Choose Preferences from the GarageBand menu. Then click Advanced. Enable the checkbox for Auto Normalize.
  4. Click the Share button and choose "Export Song to Disk." This will open an export window with some options.
  5. Choose a name for your ringtone and location to save it.
  6. Select MP3, AAC, or AIFF and chose a quality. Check your mobile phone's documentation for its preferred audio format and configuration.
  7. Click Export.
  8. Follow the instructions in your mobile phone's documentation to copy your ringtone to the phone. This might require a Bluetooth or USB connection between your Mac and the phone. It also might require software provided by the manufacturer of the phone or a third-party.
