If you see a ‘could not load‘ message when opening a System Preferences pane

If you select the top level of your startup disk as a desktop pictures folder, you might not be able to open Desktop & Screen Saver preferences or Displays preferences.

When attempting to open the Desktop & Screen Saver pane or the Displays pane of System Preferences, you might see this message:

Preferences Error - Could not load preference pane.

To resolve this issue, install the OS X v10.10.4 update from the Updates pane of the Mac App Store.
