MacBook Pro (14-inch PROLED XDR, M5 Pro or M5 Max) Battery Removal
Repair procedure with removal steps.
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
The battery must be drained to 30 percent using the Battery Drain Tool before attempting this procedure. Refer to MacBook Pro Battery Discharge Procedure.
Don’t connect the computer to an external power source during repair.
A battery should be replaced only by individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. Improper battery replacement, improper handling of parts, or failure to follow the provided instructions can result in fire, injury, data loss, or damage to the device, parts, or other property.
If the battery is dented, expanded, punctured, or otherwise physically damaged, stop the repair. Don’t remove the battery from the device. Replace the top case with a new top case with battery and keyboard.
Don’t reuse or reinstall a loose battery or a battery that has been removed. Replace it with a new battery.
Remove any protective case from the computer.
When removing broken battery strips, insert the black stick only in the locations shown (1–6). Don’t insert the black stick or other tools in the areas marked in red to avoid puncturing the soft ends of the battery cell and to prevent damage to other parts.
Caution
The battery contains six individual battery cells connected by a black frame. Don’t bend or flex the black frame.
When removing battery adhesive strips, don’t press parts in the top case for leverage. If you need to brace yourself while pulling the adhesive strips, use only the aluminum enclosure.
Remove the following part before you begin:
Tools
Adhesive activation roller
Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)
Battery alignment pins
Battery press plate
ESD-safe tweezers (round-tipped)
Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit
Note: The tools list includes tools needed for removal and reassembly. Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.
Important
A replacement battery includes battery adhesive. Battery adhesive isn’t a separate orderable part.
Removal
Important
During the procedure, remove the adhesive strips one at a time from battery cells 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then remove the adhesive strips from battery cells 5 and 6. Reference this image while completing the battery removal process.
Warning
If a battery adhesive tab or strip breaks during this procedure, follow the instructions in MacBook Pro Broken Battery Adhesive Removal.
Position the computer with the battery closest to you.

Remove the battery cover from the battery.
Gently peel the trackpad flex cable from the battery management unit (BMU) board and move it out of the way.
Lift the locking lever on the BMU flex cable connector. Then slide the end of the BMU flex cable out of the connector. Set the flex cable aside for reassembly.

Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove one 5IP screw (923-15329) from the battery assembly.

Rotate the computer so battery cells 1 and 2 are closest to you and the battery adhesive tabs are facing you.

Use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp one of the adhesive tabs on battery cell 1. Then begin to gently pull the tab away from the battery.
Warning: Don’t touch or puncture the side of the battery cell with the tweezers.
Important: One end of each adhesive tab doesn’t have adhesive. Begin to pull the tab away from the battery starting at this location.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to continue pulling the battery adhesive tab away from the side of the battery cell. Pull the tab away until it’s fully separated from the side of the battery cell.

Use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp the entire battery adhesive tab in the channel next to the battery cell.
Caution: Grasping only part of the tab may cause it to break.
Keep the ESD-safe tweezers in the channel next to the battery cell. Then gently twist the battery adhesive tab around the end of the tweezers until you see the white adhesive on the tweezers.
Caution: Twist the tweezers so the top of the tweezers rolls toward the battery.

Gently pull the battery adhesive strip away from the battery cell at an angle toward the side of the computer. Pull the adhesive strip up 2 inches (5 cm) at a time. Holding the ESD-safe tweezers parallel to the computer, twist the strip onto the end of the tweezers so the adhesive wraps smoothly, without wrinkles, around the tweezers.
Caution
Don’t rub the strips against the top case frame. Don’t touch the logic board with the tweezers. Don’t press the battery or other parts.
Don’t rub the strip on battery cell 1 against the speaker foam. If the foam is damaged by the adhesive, replace both speakers.
Important: You may need to brace against the aluminum enclosure while you pull the adhesive strip.

Repeat the pull-and-twist process gently until the battery adhesive strip is fully removed from under the battery cell.
Warning: If an adhesive tab or strip breaks, follow the instructions in MacBook Pro Broken Battery Adhesive Removal.

Repeat steps 7 through 12 on the second battery tab on cell 1. Then continue to step 14.
Repeat steps 7 through 12 to remove the battery adhesive strips from battery cells 2, 3, and 4. Then continue to step 15.
Caution: Don’t rub the strips on battery cells 2, 3, and 4 against the speaker foam. If the foam is damaged by the adhesive, replace both speakers.
Important: Rotate the computer so battery cells 3 and 4 are closest to you when removing the battery adhesive strips from these two cells.

Rotate the computer so the display hinges are closest to you. Repeat steps 7 through 12 to remove the battery adhesive strips from battery cells 5 and 6. Then continue to step 16.
Caution: Never insert any tools beneath battery cells 5 and 6 at the red-marked locations shown below.

After removing all battery adhesive strips, rotate the computer so the battery assembly is closest to you. Tilt up the end of the assembly closest to you until you can reach under it. Then slide the assembly out from under the metal BMU tab and remove it from the top case.
Caution
Support the battery assembly as you remove it to avoid bending the frame.
Ensure that the battery assembly doesn’t get caught on the metal BMU tab. Keep the angle of the battery low to the top case as you slide out the battery.

Use ESD-safe tweezers and ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean and remove any residual adhesive from the top case.
Caution
Don’t touch electronic parts with the ethanol wipe or IPA wipe.
Don’t touch the speaker foam with the ethanol wipe or IPA wipe.
