MacBook Neo Keyboard with Touch ID

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 1IP 44 mm half-moon bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to remove the 1IP screws (452-13103) from the keyboard.

    • For ANSI or ISO keyboards with Touch ID: 41 screws

    • For JIS keyboards with Touch ID: 42 screws

  2. Lift the keyboard with Touch ID out of the top case as shown.

    • Caution: Be careful not to damage the microphone flex cable while lifting the keyboard from the top case. Damaging the microphone flex cable will require a top case replacement.

Reassembly

  1. Position the keyboard with Touch ID in the top case.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the microphone flex cable, use the keyboard flex cable to clear the microphone flex cable while positioning the keyboard as shown. Damaging the microphone flex cable will require a top case replacement.

  2. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to reinstall two 1IP screws (452-13103) into the keyboard with Touch ID board as shown.

  3. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to reinstall 18 1IP screws (452-13103) into the keyboard with Touch ID board as shown.

  4. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to reinstall the remaining 1IP screws (452-13103) into the keyboard with Touch ID board, starting with the top row of screws and following the path shown.

    • For ANSI or ISO keyboards with Touch ID board: 25 screws

    • For JIS keyboards with Touch ID board: 26 screws

    • Important:

      • The image below shows an ANSI/ISO keyboard. The screw configuration for a JIS keyboard will be slightly different, but the procedure is the same.

      • The keyboard replacement kit comes with 50 keyboard screws. There will be spare screws after the completion of steps 2 through 4.

  5. Reinstall the Touch ID board.

  6. Reinstall the keyboard shield.

  7. Reinstall the trackpad interposer flex cable.

  8. Reinstall the battery.

  9. Complete logic board reassembly steps 1 through 3. Then continue to step 10 below.

  10. Peel the protective liner from the base of the keyboard flex cable as shown.

    • Caution: Don't press the flex cable to the keyboard shield yet.

  11. Slide the end of the keyboard flex cable into the connector.

  12. Flip down the locking lever the keyboard flex connector.

  13. Press the keyboard flex cable to adhere it to the keyboard shield as shown.

  14. Peel the adhesive liner off the polyester film tape on the keyboard flex cable.

  15. Press the polyester film tape to adhere it to the keyboard flex cable connector.

  16. Slide the end of the microphone flex cable into the connector. Then flip down the locking lever.

  17. Complete logic board reassembly steps 6 through 19.
