iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) Speakers

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following part before you begin:

Tools

  • 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

If you remove a speaker, you must replace it.

Note: Skip to the removal or reassembly procedure for the speaker part you're replacing. Within each procedure listed below, the woofer or tweeter being replaced is referred to simply as speaker.

Bottom Left Woofer

Removal

  1. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  2. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the replacement speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Position the replacement shims and foams on the speaker. Then press and hold the shims and foams to adhere them to the speaker.

  6. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

Bottom Right Woofer

Removal

  1. Lift the ends of the speaker cables off the connectors.

  2. Wi-Fi models only: Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove one crosshead screw from the antenna.

    • Gently lift the antenna coaxial cable off the speaker.

  3. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the replacement speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Position the replacement shims and foams on the speaker. Then press and hold the shims and foams to adhere them to the speaker.

  6. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  7. Wi-Fi models only: Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-11876) into the antenna.

Top Left Woofer

Removal

  1. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove the seven screws from the logic board cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  2. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  3. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Position the replacement shims and foams on the speaker. Then press and hold the shims and foams to adhere them to the speaker.

  6. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  7. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install seven new crosshead screws into the logic board cowling.

    • One screw (452-11649) (lower left)

    • Six screws (452-11653) (middle left, top, right side)

Top Right Woofer

Removal

  1. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove the seven screws from the logic board cowling. Then remove the logic board cowling. Save the cowling for reassembly.

  2. Gently peel and lift the antenna coaxial cable from the enclosure.

  3. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  4. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Position the replacement shim and foam on the speaker. Then press and hold the shim and foam to adhere them to the speaker.

  6. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  7. Press the end of the antenna coaxial cable to the connector.

  8. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install seven new crosshead screws into the logic board cowling.

    • One screw (452-11649) (lower left)

    • Six screws (452-11653) (middle left, top, right side)

Bottom Left Tweeter

Removal for Wi-Fi models

  1. Remove the bottom left woofer.

  2. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  3. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker out of the enclosure. Remove the speaker.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  6. Install the replacement bottom left woofer.

Removal for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Remove the bottom left woofer.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove the three crosshead screws from the antenna.

  3. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  4. Lift the end of the antenna coaxial cable off the connector.

  5. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install three new crosshead screws.

    • One screw (452-11645) (1)

    • One screw (452-11776) (2)

    • One screw (452-11646) (3)

  6. Press the end antenna coaxial cable to the connector.

  7. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  8. Install the replacement bottom left woofer.

Bottom Right Tweeter

Removal for Wi-Fi models

  1. Remove the bottom right woofer.

  2. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  3. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  6. Install the replacement bottom right woofer.

Removal for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Remove the bottom right woofer.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the speaker. Remove the grounding spring and save it for reassembly.

  3. Peel the antenna from the speaker.

  4. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  5. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Position the antenna and the grounding spring on the edge of the enclosure.

  6. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws into the grounding spring and antenna.

    • One screw (452-11636) (grounding spring)

    • One screw (452-11776) (antenna)

  7. Press the antenna to adhere it to the enclosure.

  8. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  9. Install the replacement bottom right woofer.

Top Left Tweeter

Removal for Wi-Fi models

  1. Remove the top left woofer.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the antenna and grounding spring. Peel the antenna from the speaker. Remove the grounding spring and save it for reassembly.

  3. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  4. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to ensure that it adheres to the enclosure.

  5. Position the antenna and the grounding spring on the edge of the enclosure.

  6. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-11776) into the grounding spring and antenna. Press the antenna to adhere it to the enclosure.

  7. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  8. Install the replacement top left woofer.

Removal for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Remove the top left woofer.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the antenna and the grounding spring. Remove the grounding spring and save it for reassembly.

  3. Peel the antenna from the speaker. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  4. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Position the antenna and the grounding spring on the edge of the enclosure.

  6. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install two crosshead screws into the grounding spring and antenna.

    • One screw (452-11636) (grounding spring)

    • One screw (452-11776) (antenna)

  7. Press the antenna to adhere it to the enclosure.

  8. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  9. Install the replacement top left woofer.

Top Right Tweeter

Removal for Wi-Fi models

  1. Remove the top right woofer.

  2. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  3. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  6. Install the replacement top right woofer.

Removal for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Remove the top right woofer.

  2. Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

  3. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the antenna.

  4. Gently peel the antenna from the speaker.

  5. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly for Wi-Fi + Cellular models

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  2. Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

  3. Place the speaker in the enclosure.

  4. Press and hold the top of the speaker for 20 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  5. Gently press the antenna to adhere it to the speaker.

  6. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install two crosshead screws into the antenna.

    • One screw (452-11776) (upper right)

    • One screw (452-11646) (bottom left)

  7. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  8. Install the replacement top right woofer.

Reinstall the following part to complete reassembly:
