iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) Top Button

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following part before you begin:

Tools

  • 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove three crosshead screws from the camera connector cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  2. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the top button bracket.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Remove two additional crosshead screws from the antenna coaxial cable grounding clips. The image below shows all seven crosshead screws removed from Wi-Fi models.

  3. Disconnect the camera flex cable and top button flex cable:

    • Lift the end of the camera flex cable off the connector and gently move it out of the way.

    • Lift the end of the top button flex cable off the connector. Then gently peel the top button flex cable off the enclosure.

  4. Use the 1.5 mm slotted screwdriver to break the glue between the top button bracket and enclosure. Then pry the bracket and top button out of the enclosure.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Gently lift the antenna coaxial cable and slide the bracket and top button out from under it.

Reassembly

  1. Use the black stick to break away any remaining glue from the top button area in the enclosure. Then use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean any residual adhesive.

  2. Slide the replacement top button and bracket into the enclosure.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Gently lift the antenna coaxial cable and slide the top button and bracket under the cable and into the top button area of the enclosure.

  3. Press the top button to ensure that it clicks as expected. If the button clicks as expected, continue to step 4. If it doesn't, remove the top button and bracket. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 3.

  4. Use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws into the top button bracket.

    • Left screw, Wi-Fi models (452-11655)

    • Left screw, Wi-Fi + Cellular models (452-11656)

    • Right screw (452-11652)

      • Wi-Fi models only: Use the green torque driver and crosshead bit to install two additional new crosshead screws into the antenna coaxial cable grounding clips:

      • One screw (452-11876) (1)

      • One screw (452-11666) (2)

  5. Connect the top button flex cable and camera flex cable:

    • Press the end of the top button flex cable to the connector (1). Then gently press along the area shown (2) to adhere the top button flex cable to the enclosure.

    • Position the grounding foam on top of the top button flex cable (1). Then press the end of the camera flex cable to the connector (2).

  6. Position the camera connector cowling over the ends of the flex cables. Then use the black torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws into the camera connector cowling:

    • One screw (452-11666) (1)

    • One screw (452-11647) (2)

  7. Use the green torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-11654) into the camera connector cowling.

Reinstall the following part to complete reassembly:
